Riders:Chris BaileyEddie Little John Groves Lisa Footner Nick Dunton Paul Bentley Sally Bensoussis Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A nice small group of just seven riders met at Old Mill Hall for this half day ride. It was nice to welcome Sally who was stepping up from 2* to 3* level, this being Sally’s very first 3* ride. The roads between Grove & Brize Norton were relatively quiet, which is always a bonus. As we made our way up towards Brize it was quite clear that Sally didn’t have any problems with the pace. As we were making good time & the weather was looking a little unpredictable, we made the joint decision not to stop at the Humble Bumble Cafe, but to carry on & make Carpenter Canteen our tea stop. Traffic conditions through Brize & Carterton were relatively calm.Unfortunately as we were just about to make our right turn off the B4477 into Filkins, a very impatient car driver who was approaching us from behind decided they couldn’t wait & made the wrong decision to pass us on the outside, resulting in nearly running Chris over as he turned right. After that drama we all settled back down into the ride & enjoyed the beautiful views through the Cotswold villages & lanes. Everyone made light work of the climb up to Coleshill, arriving for our tea stop (Carpenters Canteen) The service & the food was excellent, plus we all managed to sit outside enjoying the Once we were all refuelled on coffee, cake & other treats, we all set off with some rather wobbly legs for the final leg of our ride through the Vale which was uneventful! arriving in Grove for around 13:20hrs. Thanks to everyone for being such great company & to Nick for sweeping. Sally, Kudos!! you did amazingly A very evenly matched group, with an excellent average speed of between 14.8 & 15mph!! Hopefully see you all on another ride very soon! | ||

Oxfordshire Century (100-mile) Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Place |
Description:Update 23/06: we have bookings for a coffee stop at Hillier's Garden Centre, Hermitage (28 miles), lunch at Yew Tree Garden Centre, Ball Hill (51.5 miles) and late afternoon refreshments at the Fox in Denchworth (80 miles). Route has now been updated accordingly. We will be in touch with riders shortly with menu options for pre-ordering lunch.After missing a year, the Oxfordshire Century (100-mile) ride is back, this year starting from Wallingford. We’ll be following a route similar to that ridden in 2017 but with some minor tweaks around Wantage. After crossing the western edge of the Chilterns we head up the Pang Valley towards Hermitage and then south and westwards through the North Wessex Downs AoNB . After lunch we'll turn northwards through Kintbury, Chilton Foliat and Lambourn before dropping into the Vale Of White Horse via Blowingstone Hill. The final leg will be relatively flat and (hopefully) assisted by the prevailing wind back across the Vale to Wallingford. This is a ride with some longer climbs and many smaller undulations but the rewards are some great views and intimate lanes though less-familiar countryside. This is a ride for regular cyclists with some miles in their legs. The last two Century rides have seen two or three groups of ten to twelve on the road – splitting into smaller groups on busier sections. The groups will be led by experienced leaders at a steady pace to get round in about 11 hours. It is deliberately not fast to maximise enjoyment of the route and chances of everyone getting round, particularly people riding their first Century. Although we will be having regular stops at cafes and a pub, do bring snacks to keep you going. We are using Eventbrite for booking (which is free) and restricting entry to Cycling UK Members only, but we will welcome Members from across the country. Booking link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/oxfordshire-century-ride-2021-tickets-150374288545 Please keep an eye on out for any further details. |

Riders:David GreenDavid Jackson Hugo Pile James Dawton John Tranter Julie Haynes Lizzie Hardingham Nigel Hughes Robin Tucker Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Riders = 11 Weather:Report:Great support for the Oxfordshire century (100-mile) ride this year with 26 starting and all but one completing the ride.The weather forecast for Sunday hadn't been great and it wasn't looking good at 6am with rain drumming on our conservatory roof. But the rain cleared around 7 and the ride started under overcast but dry conditions. We encountered a with a few short showers but also some longer periods of sunshine during the day. Much better than we were expecting. We rode in three groups led by James, Robin and myself with a blend of riders from different Oxfordshire clubs in each group, allocated according to preferences for riding companions and faster or slower groups. From all accounts this worked out well as did the three refreshment stops. It is always satisfying to complete a century and to enjoy less frequented lanes; well done everyone and congratulations to Lizzie on completing her first. Watch out for further details and some pictures. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Wednesday before the ride.Heading north to Southmoor, at 25km this will be our longest 1*evening ride of the season. Out via Lyford with a gentle climb from the River Ock to Southmoor and a nice easy descent to Charney Bassett on the way back. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:Despite catching the edge of a shower at Denchworth, this turned into a very pleasant evening to be out on the bike. We extended the ride slightly to visit the old Lamb and Flag at Southmoor. This was the lunch stop on the very first Wantage Ride, used occasionally for refreshments on Saturday 1* rides since. Sad to see it is now a private house.Great to see Steve B out or his first ride of the season. Thanks everyone for your company on an enjoyable evening. | ||

As we left Grove we had a brief shower, not much , just enough to cool us down. At Goosey we caught up with the 3* riders who were saving their energy for Blowing Stone Hill! We continued through Fernham and on to Faringdon where we avoided the town center as there is work being done renovating the Town Hall, causing chaos in the square. we went over Jespers Hill on the old Wantage road and made good speed down the A417 with a tail wind to the Shellingford crossroads where we turned left, heading home via Gainfield Charney and Denchworth.A total of 37.2K, a very enjoyable Tuesday evening ride with good company! Report:A very nice ride with excellent company, reasonable weather & fantastic views over the rolling Berkshire Countryside. A slight nagging head wind on the first half of the ride later disappearing. The roads were fairly quiet with considerate road users. Clare had a minor mechanical at Littlecote resulting in her chain coming off, but Clare soon put that right & we were back on our way to Hungerford stopping off at Eliane for our elevenses. Enjoying more fabulous views on the final leg of our ride, Hungerford Common, Kennet & Avon Canal & the beautiful Berkshire villages of Kintbury, Boxford & Leckhampstead. Finally we all got to enjoy the wonderful descent of Chainhill which is always great fun!You were all a lovely group to lead. There is something very special about riding with a group of like minded cyclists over the Downs on a beautiful evening as the sun begins to fade and the sky takes on a pinkish glow.This was a hilly route (over 500m) but everyone tackled the climbs with enthusiasm and enjoyed the downhill rewards. One particular car driver is best forgotten - but we also met a much friendlier one who had obviously been watching Le Tour and pulled over to let us tackle the hill without dodging his vehicle and encouraged us along with enthusiastic shouts of “Allez Allez” A pleasure to lead such a great group. Occasional short or gentle climbs. This month an away day 1* ride to the Thames Valley starting from the large car park outside Standlake village hall (OX29 7SB) with tea stop at Aston Pottery. I thought I'd repeat a ride I Iast lead in 2018 that gives 1* riders a chance to visit Aston Pottery. After leaving the village hall, we'll ride through the villages of Stanton Harcourt, Hardwick & Yelford before stopping at the pottery after about 12 miles. We'll then have another 6 miles to go back to the hall, via Cote, Shifford & a bridleway to the A415. I'm aiming to to ride near the top end of 1* pace and the route includes a couple of inclines similar to the rise from the A417 to Childrey. |

Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.Bookings are now open and I will take a maximum of 8. Very loosely based on previous solstice rides, our theme is the 3 White Horses reasonably local to us, starting with our own White Horse. We will then make our way to Marlborough and use cycle tracks on the edge of the town to view the small, little known Marlborough White Horse before dropping down to Alton Barnes to view the last of our trio of White Horses. Our return finishes with the glorious swoop that is Chain Hill We will have a couple of stops (to be decided) and take this at an easy, all day pace as it is a ride of 120kms and over 1200 meters of climbing. |
||
Report:With the weather due to be scorching, the select 3 decided a 7.30 start was in order. Once we managed to get out of Wantage - they weren't kidding when they said Portway was closed- Andy and I weren't too late meeting Sharon . With the weather forecast to be so hot, we decided to skip going up WHH, there were enough hills coming and we needed to ensure plenty of energy left for post-lunch.We made swift progress to Marlborough - shade was available at the top of all the hills which ensured those waiting didn't fry. it was lovely to do redo some relatively recently discovered roads, the Ogbourne Maisey to Rockley road is a delight. We had determined we were going to have long stops with plenty of recovery and our first at the Food Court in Marlborough was a great start. They are always so efficient and very cyclist friendly. No problem with water bottle filling or the like. I was convinced we could see the Marlborough White Horse without having to go down the track - I ws wrong . No one felt compelled to go and find it though! Onwards we went, through lovely villages, hills, heat, mainly considerate drivers and increasing heat. We paused for decent water stops and then had our second long stop at Wendys in Great Bedwyn. If you haven't yet found this its a gem! Open 10-4, 7 days a week on the former bowls club, part of the recreation ground, its got everything a cyclist can ask for. After that it was a blur of hills, heat, more pretty villages, great roads and more heat. It was cooler moving than stopping but we continued to stop regularly for decent amounts of water. After the always great decent of Chain Hill we parted company. A very good days cycling if a trifle hot. Did I mention the heat? | ||

Riders:Barry StantonBrendan St John David Jackson Des Higgs Gareth Smith Gerry Jones Ian Howland Julie Haynes Karen Bunting Karl Blake Val Smith Riders = 11 Report:This ride took place on a very hot day. The temperature was 28C as we met in Grove and was still 25C towards the end of the ride. However, my initial concerns about the heat making riding difficult were unfounded. Once we were cycling the movement of air made riding much more pleasant. The heat was still very apparent whenever we stopped although it was noticably cooler to stop in the shade. The route selected for us was not too hilly - especially important on such a hot day. This route, along with finding riding OK in this heat and the usual good company made for an enjoyable evening ride.With eleven riders it was necessary to split into two groups on many of the roads. A particular thank you to Des Higgs for leading the other group. | ||

Riders:Chris BaileyEddie Little Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce LeeAnn Norris Sharon Bedford Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Six of us set off from Grove on a very steamy & hot evening Unfortunately this was short lived as poor Joy got a puncture by the Tesco Express. As it was so hot, Joy very kindly didn’t want to hold the ride up, so she decided to leave the ride. I hope you got home safely Joy! Please remember I am always more than happy to mend a puncture for anyone who is on my ride, never a problem!!The five of us carried on around the Thames Valley enjoying the beautiful views & some wonderful fragrances of summer. One of the highlights of the ride was Greatbrook & Old Shifford which never fails to disappoint no matter the season. We said goodbye to Kath at Southmooor, as her bike had a date with the Modern Cyclist. That then just left the four of us to make our way back to Grove. Thanks to everyone for being such excellent company. Hopefully see you all very soon on another ride!! | ||

Report:There were two 2* groups this evening. Steph took the other one round the same loop in the opposite direction. We welcomed new rider Andy Rimmer on his first outing with us.It was raining as we met at Old Mill Hall. However, after we had been riding a while the rain eased and we had a short stop just after Charney Bassett for some of us to remove waterproofs - followed shortly afterwards by the sight of rainbow. Our route took us across the A420 at Southmoor. The planned route showed a crossing of the A420 on the flat via Draycott Road but I chose to go across via Beggars Lane and the footbridge. This added some spice when we encountered a good growth of stinging nettles as we came to the ramp up. My apologies to all those in the group who were stung. The rest of the ride was less eventful but dry despite the heavy skies. It did rain again - but fortunatley after we were home or just about home. | ||

Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Wednesday before the ride.A Wantage start gives us the opportunity to get to the Lambourn Valley which is usually a glorious ride. Add to that two great descents firstly past Sheepdrove and then Chain Hill. [ Not mentioning the climbing - but nothing too steep!] |
||
Report:Partly because the ride leader had cycled through a monsoon like downpour and some very large puddles to get the the start (and was very wet!) and partly because we were worried about the planned steep downhills on very wet roads we decided to postpone for 24 hours.Lisa bravely went off for a different solo ride (hence credited with a ride here) and the rest of went home (yet more deep puddles negotiated). Four of us met at 6.30pm Wednesday. Despite a few threatening clouds we had a mostly sunny ride and the countryside was looking green and spectacular after the recent rainfall. We battled against the headwind to climb Hackpen before being rewarded with the sweeping descent past Sheepdrove. We had a glorious ride from Lambourn to Shefford (once the wind was mostly behind us) before heading back over the downs and down Chain Hill (where Chris quickly left the rest of us behind and almost ran into a Red Kite). Thanks to the group for being so flexible given the weather. | ||

I am currently limiting the numbers to ten, and a couple of early birds have already contacted me, so get your bids in early! Email, or text on 07875 456521 Please note revised start time of 0900. A reprise of my touring ride down into Hampshire, with lunch at the garden centre in Kings Worthy. This is a full day (almost 110km, and over 1,000m of climbing) at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders, but well within the capability of most strong 2* and all 3* riders. The weather at least should be a tad warmer than the previous iteration which was run in January and suffered ice showers! The ride starts at the Base Café in the Greenham Industrial Park on the south side of Greenham Common, just off the A339 to Basingstoke. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey John Tranter Katherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Sharon Bedford Riders = 7 Weather:Report:This turned out to be a cracking ride with a super team, aided by luck in avoiding the weather. We met as planned near the cafe in Greenham, with parking courtesy of Sharon B's company. The route took us south east towards Basingstoke, via leafy lanes, a bit of gravel (and a bridge bypassing a deep ford), and lots of snoopy up and down. Coffee was consumed at the excellent "Jolly Olly's" café in East Oakley, accompanied by cakes and some pork-related rolls. In sunshine with occasional clouds we then moved south-south-west towards Winchester, with the idyl spoiled only by the top-dressing of loose chipping along a couple of the roads. Smack on time at 1230 we arrived at Cobbs Farm Shop in Headbourne Worthy for lunch. Here the gods smiled on us, as the only significant rain of the day (and it was torrential for a brief period) passed through while we ate under an impressive garden awning. Post-lunch it was uphill to start (isn't it always) before following the beautiful valley of the River Test as far as St Mary Bourne. The big hill to Ashampstead was then disposed of, before dropping down towards Highclere where Andy suffered the only puncture of the day thanks to all the gravel that had been washed onto the roads. After a bit more up and down (quite a bit, actually) we arrived back at the start with weary legs but a great sense of achievement. Well done to all concerned, and thanks to Andy for being such a stoic sweeper throughout the day. | ||
