Starting from Wantage Market Place gave us the chance to get a bit further afield this evening. We went up Lark Hill, a tough climb and a bit damp but we managed ok. Then along the Ridgeway - with puddles but very fine views this evening.

We chose the Harwell descent, grassy and 'as fast as you want' then the really enjoyable twisty singletrack in the woods round the campus. This raised enough enthusiasm that we even added a bit more of this in near Hendred before heading back along the Sustrans route and via Ardington.

A select group of just 3 riders for this morning ride, which was really nice. The roads between Denchworth & Hatford were unusually busy for a Saturday morning. Once we had turned off from Hatford into Sandy Lane, we were able to enjoy some wonderful quiet lanes. We had a small stretch of the A420 to cycle along up to Littleworth. Due to the M4 being closed, this made the A420 a bit of a challenge, but we all made it nice & safely into Littleworth. From this point we enjoyed a nice decent & the quiet roads to our tea stop. Amanda had heard great things of the cinnamon buns at Blake’s Kitchen of Clanfield, so we made this our pit stop. A cyclist cafe for sure & as for the cinnamon buns (mm) A fantastic cafe stop, thanks Amanda. Once refreshed we made our way through to old Shifford & Great Brook which was mostly traffic free. Buckland Hill was tackled by all 3 riders with ease(clap) As we crossed over the A420 at Buckland which was a breeze, we gave Kath a (hi) heading in the opposite direction. We arrived back in Wantage 13:30 hrs. Kudos to Gerry for using a mountain bike on this ride. Very impressive. Thanks guys for your great company!!

A very pleasant evening, with a bit of wind coming from the west so that's where we headed first - on the track behind the sports centre to Letcombe and up the hill fort track.

Then David Brown had the plan to take us over to Fawley (the one without the oil refinery) and I'm glad to say the track was a lot less muddy than the last time he led me that way (pre-lockdown last winter!) We then headed northeast, almost to Farnborough (the one without the air show) and made our big descent on Jolly Green Giant followed by Goodards Brook.

As my wife had taken the car to IKEA (we've downsized to one) I had to ride home to Abingdon, but on a fine evening such as this, a few extra miles on top of the 15 that everyone else did were no bad thing.

It was great to welcome Lizzie for the first time, Terry coming back after a Betjeman Ride a couple of years ago and Martin on his first ride with us since 2018. The group rode really well together and we had a mellow and uneventful run around the Hanney's and across to Steventon. Steventon Hill was made a bit more complicated than usual by roadworks and Featherbed Lane was the usual slightly annoying rat-run, so it was nice to drop into East Hendred and have the roads to ourselves again. A great coffee stop at Ardington was followed by strong riding past Lains Barn and home.

A beautiful morning for a ride, and so delighted to see Callum out for the first time since lockdown , along with Karen Bunting , a first time rider with the club. The weather was fine and dry if a little chilly at the start. We started off at a comfortable pace along the flat through Drayton, Sutton Courtenay and Appleford before heading into Long Wittenham where we had a short break before tackling the first hill of the day up to Wittenham Clumps. Here we enjoyed the terrific views, companionship of the cattle and red Kites, and a break for sustenance before enjoying the sweep downhill.

All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. This is a pre-bookable ride. To book a place, text your name to the ride leader no earlier than 9:00am on the Monday before the ride. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A SATURDAY RIDE THIS MONTH AND STARTING FROM OMH. Also note the group will be a maximum of 6 riders on this ride. If there is significant interest I will see if another leader will take a second group 15 minutes later, with a lunch stop at a different cafe to the first group.

Route and description updated Monday 14 September.

Following advice about the A40, I’ve reversed this route so it will be out via Black Bourton and Buford before reaching Bourton-on-the -Water for the return via Clanfield. We'll stop just over half way at Sherbourne village shop and tea rooms for lunch. With the current situation we will only be doing one stop, so might be as well to bring a snack along.

Not overly hilly but of course being the Cotswolds there will be some hills :)

Report:
Group of 6 set off on a beautiful Saturday morning, straightforward ride out to Bampton via Buckland at which point Katherine handed over leadership to Andy as her injured foot was not coping with being clipped in :(.

Nice route through Buford avoiding most of the very busy town centre, shortly followed by a lovely descent into an even busier Bourton-on-the-Water. The following climb out of Bourton was the payback, but the rolling roads to lunch at Sherborne were enjoyable. The takeaway from the tea rooms was enjoyed by all and the mainly downhill return home was brisk at times.

Thanks to Andy for stepping in to the breach and to the nice social group.

Off Road Tuesday Evening Ride 2*
Leader:
Robin Tucker
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres required and good lights when it gets dark (‘get you home’ lights in Spring/Autumn). We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if we decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

Weather:
partly cloudy (night)
Report:
The nights are closing in rapidly now... it was dark half way through the ride! And that darkness happened just before Chris managed to put a tear in his tyre sidewall, unfortunately the sealant didn't seal it, so we had to put a tube in.

The ride was good though! It was particularly enjoyable to go through the woods around Harwell in the night, with the lights on, seeing the shadows dance.

Our route was out on the cycle track, up at Goddards Brook, East on the Ridegway, down at Harwell corner, along the fence to the woods and around them. Then arriving at the Sustrans track and realising how much time we had used, we just turned west and headed for home!

This week we are going to Southmoor via Charney Bassett, over the bridge to Longworth, across to Hinton Waldrist and then back over the A420 to Pusey and along to Stanford in the Vale for a coffee stop. Back via Park Lane and Denchworth. About 20 miles

We had a very pleasant ride out to Hinton Waldrist with 3 regular riders plus Lizzie and Terry who are fairly new and Ernie who was on his first ride with the club. The weather was very kind after forecast rain, we ended up cycling in the sunshine, even though there was a brisk headwind at times. We met up with the solo riders at Stanford and had a very enjoyable time sitting outside and chatting (socially distanced of course!)

3* Saturday Half Day Ride - Oxford Special 3*
Leader:

Start Time:

Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. This is a pre-bookable ride. To book a place, text your name to the ride leader no earlier than 9:00am on the Sunday before the ride. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained.

Time to brush off the dust on an old classic ride into the very heart of Oxford and out again. I've been a College Bursar now for six years, so I've picked up a few tricks and secrets (plus juicy gossip) and these will be shared as we go. We head out to Southmoor and then the old road parallel to the A420 all the way to Cumnor. Then there is some very cunning routing across tracks and underpasses to get to the Thames, after which we pop out by Westgate and head into town. Sadly, Covid prevents me offering St Cross College as a tea stop, but we will find a local cafe and improvise. We then head out of town along the river towpath and the newly resurfaced NCN5 past Kennington. We then head through lovely Sunningwell to Dry Sandford and the unexpected Tubney tunnel under the A420 to Fyfield and home.

About 40 miles and I plan to be back by 1-1.30.

NB: please bring a face mask for the cafe stop.

Report:
It was really nice to be able to do an Oxford Special ride - it's been a long time since the last one! There was quite a blustery wind though and this definitely made it a tougher ride than expected.

All went well as we had a tailwind (on average) over to Cumnor. We then enjoyed the usual views of 'dreaming cranes' from the top of Botley before the lovely run along the river and over the intriguing Gasworks Bridge. We did a quick circuit up to Wellington Square, back to Broad Street and then down to the river again to go along the towpath to our coffee stop at the Isis Farmhouse. A bit fiddly and techie to use their website ordering process, but we got there in the end. We then bashed on along the nice new NCN5 path up to Kennington and over to Sunningwell and Dry Sandford. The distance was beginning to take its toll on some tired legs, so we split into two groups for the final section to help with the timings.

Thanks to all for your company!

Another convert from road to off it, with Eddie. And another dry ride snatched from between rainfalls. Pretty much dark from the start though.
Tonight was an extended version of a 'pub night' ride, except not getting close to the Fox. We headed out to Letcombe and up to the Segsbury Castle. Then SW to Sheepdrove and west to the partly rutted descent at Seven Barrows - which was actually quite fun.
Then it was north to the Ridgeway, but not along it - just straight over and down the Sparsholt Field the other side. A great run down.
Then back on a mix of quiet roads and bridleways.
