Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.Tonight we head out via Denchworth, and on to Charney Bassett, before curling back to West Hanney. If conditions permit, we will then take the track across the fields back to the Denchworth Road, before heading back to Grove. Around 11 miles and nice and flat. |
||
Riders:Carin TranterMandy Wassell Martyn Wigmore Nick Fisher Steve Boreham Thiyanga Kotecha Riders = 6 Weather:Report:A lovely relaxed start anyway.... with seven of us setting out, plus young Noah riding along on Nick's back seat(!)The usual "one star" initial stop in Denchworth, where we observed a large walnut tree, and debate ensued as to who is allowed to pick the walnuts where it over hangs in a public street. No real consensus on this, and we moved on(!). The next question posed was who knew of Sheephouse Lane and where it was - as this was listed on the ride route but the leader had no idea! A challenge was set.... Sheephouse Farm was duly noted, and natural conclusions followed, although the road itself was unmarked.... On arrival at West Hanney, I suggested we take the track from West Hanney directly back to the Denchworth Road. I was asked if my bike, with narrow tyres, was up to this, and I reassured Thiyanga that it was - only to get a puncture immediately we hit the track!! Great effort was made by me and Martyn to change the tube - the tyre being incredibly difficult to get on and off. Eventually succeeded but could not then get the tube hard enough (trying three pumps) to ride on. Nick and Chloe had gone on home, understandably. Chloe, aged five - managing the ride superbly throughout, so a big "well done". So we left all to go on, Mandy and I went back via the road - with me nursing the bike all the way back. Thanks to Martyn for your efforts, and to all for your support. Eventful!

Leader:David Talboys |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.This is a bridging ride at the lower level of the range to encourage riders who feel ready to move up to the next star level. The route is that of a cancelled ride from earlier in the season. There should be plenty of daylight to cover the 40 km at a comfortable pace. Apart from Hackpen Hill, there are a couple of other minor climbs, with some long enjoyable descents and a flat return home. Broadly, this will be a ride out to Seven Barrows, via The Letcombes and Hackpen Hill. The sharp turn before Lambourn will take us to descents of Blowingstone and Fawler Hills, before returning via Baulking, Park Lane, and Denchworth. |

Due to the numbers we split into two groups with Dave leading the first group and myself, Nicole, leading the second. Of course we wanted to give the first group of riders enough space so took a good bridging pace through the Letcombes. As we watched the first group scale Hackpen Hill we were joined by a friendly chap we had just seen going in the opposite direction. Having been interested in the group he turned around and joined us. After Yvonne had given him a compelling introduction (something about lots of women ) he joined us for the remainder of the ride. Up and over Hackpen Hill we enjoyed the descent and made light work back through the gallops to Blowingstone. Safely down towards Lambourne we enjoyed the flat meander back to Grove to meet up with the remains of the first group.A steady ride giving new and 2* riders a good feel for the 3* group. We hope to see regular riders and our visitor Richard Hypher on more 3* rides again.

A flat route heading towards Lechlade followed by a climb towards Coles hill. Ruth on her fixed gear bike with tri bars came to the front leaving us all in her wake hanging on to her wheel ! from Shrivenham, Baulking In all the excitement we missed a turning hence the slight change to the planned route Apparently the Denchworth dash was only contended by Ruth and Jason ( the first time he had been seen at the front !) Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.Shortened version of the Sunday ride I led in January, this time crossing the River Pang at Stanford Dingley. Quite a bit of climbing but the worst of this will be over early after the grind up Chain Hill. The reward comes in the form of the quiet lanes and views that follow. No stops until Hillers at Hermitage at 45 km so bring some snacks. Estimated return time 1730. Mobile No for contact evening or morning before: 07582 483315 |
||
Report:Delightful ride with good company through leafy Berkshire. We missed the storm at Wantage but caught shower at Stanford Dingley. However by Hermitage the clouds had disappeared and we enjoyed tea and cakes outside in the sun. Slightly delayed by the puncture fairy but arrived back at 1730. It was good to see Terry back on good form (and Jenny not too worried about him!) and to hear his story.

Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). THIS IS A HILLY RIDE.Lights please folks - twiddly gears, drink and something to nibble at your discretion. Prompted by their album The Sunset Tree, The Mountain Goats have inspired a route to the SouthEast for those of a similarly caprine tendency. Crimped by an onrushing sunset allowing just over two hours play, we need to take a fairly direct route "up and down Chain" to cross the A34 at Beedon, where the "lanes fun" begins with an exciting descent towards Hampstead Norreys - care here, can be gravel-strewn. Tonight's feature follows soon after; a little used climb up Thornhill to Woodrows Farm, perched on top of the Compton Downs. The reward, as if the climb itself doesn't have you in raptures is the descent par excellence of Applepie Hill, followed by the Compton rollers. We return via the infrequently climbed Copperage (Copperhead) Road humming that gravelly Steve Earle ditty as we go. This affords us the luxury of a final fling down Chain Hill in the rays of the setting sun where the ride will end at a scheduled 8:30pm. 50km / 610m vertical |
||
Riders:Hugh FalknerNick Fisher Nick Stokell Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Hypher Richard Kembleton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A cool and becalmed evening emerged from an afternoon of sporadic deluges, to reward those determined to make the most of the remaining evening ride opportunities. Six departed OMH including Richard Hypher making a 4* debut and we collected Pete Cowan in mid-decent of Chain Hill to make it a magnificent seven. With cloud breaking sporadically to allow a filtered oblique evening glow to pick out the headlands as we progressed through the Downland villages, a hint of Autumn was in the air. Successive short but sharp inclines kept us honest, in particular Nick F who made the obvious choice of a single-speed for a ride with over 600m of climbing – a fit fellow indeed. Richard K took a helpful front role in ensuring some of the less obvious turns were not missed, thanks Richard. Having revelled in the pacey gravel-strewn decent to Hampstead Norreys we paused briefly to ascertain a rare 4* puncture was salvable and leaving the very capable Rich to catch us up, set off up Thorn Hill. To my delight, this was indeed a new climb to many of the gang and proved a pleasing effort, popping us out at Woodrows Farm midway between the Four Points and Applepie Hill. I once-again failed in my long-held wish to descend “the Pie†without touching the brakes – it is possible, but not for the faint hearted. Compton Rollers and Ilsley Alps knocked off, we clawed up Copperage Road to Farnborough in the advancing dusk and with fiery tails lit dropped stone-like from the head of Chain Hill to end a very pleasant 2 hours action. My thanks to you all – no drama, much chatter, sorted

Description:General description:RIDE CANCELLED. Monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy on second Saturday mornings. The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. RIDE CANCELLED DUE TO INJURY. I AM VERY SORRY, but I am having to cancel this ride at short notice due to injury. Of course, you're welcome to take yourself on a ride, but I cannot lead it! Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Waterfront Cafe, Benson |
Description:A route for all you Dawn French fans, visiting Turville where the Vicar of Dibley was filmed. Not for TV couch-potatoes, though: 109 km and 957m climbing at three-star pace. Start at the Waterfront Cafe in Benson - [parking in St Helen's Avenue: coming from Oxford direction, left opposite the cafe and immediately right]. Cafe opens at 08.00, so plenty of opportunity for caffeine loading and loo visits before the depart. We take the back way through Wallingford and over the Ridgeway to Ipsden, with a grungy, grass-down-the-middle lane to climb towards Stoke Row. After that, easier roads to Henley and the attractive riverside road to Remenham and the climb of Remenham Hill. Optional coffee stop at the fantastic Velolife, Warren Row. From there it is fairly flat to the lunch stop at Jenner's Cafe, Maidenhead. We then ascend Winter Hill [the easier way], through Marlow, then lovely lanes through Freith and Fingest to reach Turville. Then hard work up the Turville Tunnel to Christmas Common and a fast descent of Watlington Hill. Then pretty flat home through Chalgrove. Afternoon tea at the Waterfront. Please text me if you intend to ride. |
||
Riders:Andrew SmallDavid Smith Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Nick Dunton Sharon Bedford Ursula Hallam Riders = 7 Weather:Report:If I were to specify the ideal weather for cycling I reckon it would be pretty close to todays offering: warm and sunny without ever being hot enough to raise a sweat; and a cooling breeze that was never strong enough to impede progress. Perfect. Six riders set off from Benson well fed and caffeinated and we picked-up Andrew Small in Stoke Row, resisting the new café there. I was under strict instructions not to damage myself ahead of my daughter's wedding photos next week, so we took the descents at a sensible pace, especially Witheridge Hill which was running with what we hoped was water, although it smelt worse. After Henley and Remenham Hill we stopped at the aching cool Velolife, together with what seemed about 100 other cyclists. Plenty of shaved legs and carbon bling on display. Lunch at Jenner’s was a little slow but satisfying. Climbing out of Marlow I identified what caused my blowout on the Boulters Bash a few weeks ago: two badly eroded drain-covers which I hope I have now mapped in my memory for future reference. We polished off the Turville Tunnel and Watlington Hill without difficulty and all too soon were back in Benson. Great company and collaborative riding throughout. Thanks to David for minding the back.

So we'll head to East Hanney instead. An essentially flat ride across the vale, but we'll start off using the recently re-opened track out of Grove to the new Cow Lane railway bridge en route to West Hanney. This used to be a regular route for club rides in our early days but fell out of favour due to deepening ruts, mud and hardcore! However, it has been wonderfully improved by Railtrack as part of the works to install the new bridge. The track is a little stony in one or two places but easily manageable on all but the narrowest-rimmed road bikes. We'll continue to East Hanney and explore some hidden corners of the village. We'll return to Grove via West Hanney and Denchworth, a round trip of about 11 miles. |

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly - this one is not!LIGHTS ESSENTIAL - Thank You In anticipation of onrushing evenings and a chill in the dusk air we take inspiration from the Sisters of Mercy and head North to the "Floodland". A predominantly flat and lanes based ride will take an easy anticlockwise route across the Thames flood plain between Northmoor and Buckland Marsh. Calm conditions might permit a glimpse of "Lucretia, My Reflection" in the still depths, with the only climb of note the familiar rise away from "Never Land" up to Buckland. A brisk and business-like 3* rate of progress (it really is flat) should see us back at OMH for sunset a smidge before 20:30 - hence the absolute requirement for LIGHTS Forecast: a warm, sunny evening, light Westerlies - could even be called Summer ! |

Riders:Adrian WestDavid Smith David Talboys Des Higgs John Groves Joy Arthur Mike Cooke Phil Ward Richard Hypher Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Steve Joyce Tony Clark Ursula Hallam Riders = 14 Weather:Report:A mild and sunny evening greeted us at sign-on, with 14 keen to experience the nearest we can get to flatlander poldering in the locality. To augment the Dutch ambience, a keen Westerly wind nagged at us each time we turned toward the sun, but no matter, no doubt it helped on the downwind legs. Fortune favoured us at the head of the Charney Road as we crossed the A420 without drama or delay. A tactical split into two groups down the commuter run to Newbridge (thanks Roger for the impromptu 2nd lead) got us into the meat of the ride as we entered the delightful narrow lanes around Standlake. Evidently, it was a great night for riding as we committed to a steady stream of acknowledgements from oncoming cyclists and a particularly cheery group of pink-clad Condors. Turning for home near Bampton, Des and Adrian couldn’t resist the call of The Trout – cheers lads . As lights were deployed a dewy chill was noticeable, so working a little to gain the height up to Buckland proved doubly useful. The ensuing downhill run in the glow of a harvest sun was rattled off in good style and we finished a smidge after 8:30. Many thanks to you all for such a mellow evening, an accomplished large group negotiated the vehicular challenges with aplomb. Particular thanks from me to David Smith for sweeping so effectively with great signalling .

Regular Wantage Ride - the Oxford Special Series | 2* |

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:PLEASE NOTE: to try to assess catering, could anyone planning to join this ride contact me to confirm? I don't need a 100% commitment, just wanting to get a feel for it.NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove. A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, 2* pace, but a long day with a total distance of around 90km / 57 miles. We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington, past the house with a shark in the roof, down Headington Hill, right into the heart of Oxford for some classic sightseeing moments (I am a College Bursar - I can give you the inside stories). Then we head north for a great lunch stop at the Plough pub in Wolvercote, before some lovely scenery around Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor, followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield and Charney Bassett. Easy riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). |

Riders:Barry StantonDes Higgs Eusebio Bermejo John Tranter Katherine Boyce Mike Bailey Riders = 6 Weather:Report:A wonderful day for a bike ride, and a good group gathered. A particular welcome to Eusebio, recently arrived in the UK with his wife and keen to join us from a very strong cycling background back in Spain.We made good time in the first 20 miles or so and decided to treat ourselves to a bonus extra coffee stop at Nutcotts Garden Centre. Having worked our way to the Baldons immediately after that, we were startled by a very big explosion. At first everyone thought it was a gunshot, until Des pointed us to his rear tyre blown off the rim by a disintegrated inner tube. A definite candidate for "puncture of the year". Fortunately it hadn't damaged the tyre and it was quickly fixed. The climb of Garsington Hill was despatched easily enough, but a combination of recent rain and a lack of time prompted a change of route so that we dropped down into Horspath rather than Wheatley and left the Headington Shark experience for another time. Having sailed down into the centre of Oxford, we resisted the temptations of the Broad Street Beer Festival and headed north for lunch at the Plough in Wolvercote. They were busy and the food was slow coming out, but we enjoyed sitting in the sun and 'helping' Eusebio with English phrases. Port Meadow was lovely, Cumnor Hill was not too bad and we headed for home via Appleton, Hinton Waldrist and Pusey. A great day out, thanks to a really fun group.

We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.This week a variant of a regular Tuesday favourite. We'll be heading to Betterton, but by a slightly different route through Wantage, and with the choice of routes back at the end.... We'll join Sustrans route 544 by the Nelson and follow it through to Lockinge and climb gently up to Betterton . After stopping at the top to the hill to take in the views, we'll enjoy the lovely descent into Ardington. After touring the village , we'll climb up to the Lains Barn junction and then enjoy a second long descent passing Lains Barn back into the Vale. A round trip of 10-11 miles. We should be back before sunset, but lights are recommended. |
||
Report:A really enjoyable evening ride. Sometimes, there are things that you can do with a smaller group that you can't with a larger one, like getting lost (!) and tracking down a hidden gem...

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.Heading east for a change tonight. Out of Grove to the Lains Barn road and then swooping down into Ginge to experience the slightly strange set of (in my view) slightly over-perfect little villages nestling under the Ridgeway. We go along to the permissive track cutting through to the road above East Hendred, then a few yards on the A417 before cutting through Featherbed Lane to the great descent of Steventon Hill. Then the Cow Common road back across to the Hanney's and home. About 20 miles at an appropriately mellow 2* pace. |

May be hilly.Taking a break from the (bigger) hills we'll head out through Denchworth to pass north of Stanford-in-the-Vale and then turn south-west to Shrivenham. A bit of a slog up through Bishopstone puts us on the rolling spring-line road, past the White Horse (optional detour!) and back towards Wantage, with a final jink back to Grove through Challow and Denchworth to avoid the bad roads in the centre of Wantage. 55km, target time 2 hours; please bring lights. |

Riders:Adrian WestCharlotte Ward Frank Schroer Jason Jones Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:A reasonably-sized group, with one tandem, set out in light rain which soon cleared up, and set a decent pace out through Denchworth. For once, Frank was there from the start. It was all nice and conversational until we hit the spring line and started to climb up to Bishopstone. Adrian left us at Ashbury, having already done half the ride to get to Grove in the first place. A cheeky Dragon Hill with a fine sunset led to Jason puncturing on the final cattle grid, stymying his chance at the Dash. Paul volunteered to make his own way home soon after, and Phil and Charlotte's tandem left in Denchworth. Peter, Frank, and Rich made it to the Dash but since I still don't know where it officially ends I can't name the winner...Thanks to everyone for coming. Start Location:Isle of Wight |
Description:PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RIDE IS NOW FULL. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO ON A WAITING LIST PLEASE LET ME KNOW.Based on the ride that John Talbot did for many years, this uses what I think was the nicest of the rides he did. Although this is just over a 100km riding with just shy of 1400m of climbing, done at the right pace, this is a very accessible ride that takes in the best of the Isle of Wight. Glorious views, swooping hills and a ferry ride at Cowes (£1), what more could you ask for . PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO COME We will catch the 08:40 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (£15.40 for adults and £11.50 for 60+, tickets can be bought online in advance or at the ticket office before sailing), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 40 minutes. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (£6.70 for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines. You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. Boarding commences 15 minutes before sailing. We will car share as much as possible. There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes, toast) but there is a cafe at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast! We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a late morning cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the Toll Gate Cafe next to the harbour in Bembridge. We'll aim to stop for an afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes dependant on the time. Return ferry will either be the 17:05 or 18:05 from Yarmouth. |

Riders:David BridgeDavid Smith Jenny Gower John Tranter Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Nick Stokell Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Sharon Bedford Terry Penn Ursula Hallam Riders = 13 Weather:Report:Well that was a splendid days cycling. Everything came together: great weather, group and roads, oh and food!12 of us made the early morning journey to Lymington for the ferry. Sharon cycled 10 minutes from her Mother-in-Laws - an excellent plan! We survived the grumpy ticket collector and the large number of scooters as we boarded and arrived on the Island only slightly late. We were quickly off and tackling our first rise, the first of many, before encountering our first quiet lane, with what became trade mark beautiful tarmac. A stop to admire Freshwater Bay and we were on our way again. We settled into a rhythm of fast downhills followed by plodding up hills (well I did anyway, some danced uphill!) but the views were stunning and the group quickly jelled. Everyone contributed to route finding and no one grumbled when turnings were missed and steps needed retracing. Whenever traffic required it, everyone organised themselves into small groups. Just before our coffee stop at Godshill the cry went up of puncture, whilst the rest of us carried on, Richard and Jon made short work of replacing the tube and before we had a chance to order, they re-joined us. Cream teas before midday were very enjoyable and those having the savouries were just as happy. Onward to lunch at Bembridge which seemed much to soon for some of us! The Tollgate café is a wonderful institution - a real taste of the past, in a beautiful setting, particularly on a warm sunny day. Then we were on our way to Cowes, just before we reached the chain ferry - now the floating bridge - Richard discovered a slow puncture, probably caused by a small tyre split. Repairs started on the river crossing and completed on the other side, with the aid of a biscuit wrapper . The walk through the pedestrian centre was achieved without incident and it wasn't long before we were eating ice cream on the beach. A final push and we reached the ferry port with a few minutes to spare before check in time. A really great days riding with a very supportive group of riders. Here's to next year . Oh and forgot to say thank you to David Bridges for most of the pictures and we bumped into Karen from Cycling UK Reading who rides with us from time-to-time

However, a few spots early on did not materialise further, and we stayed dry. Tentative suggestion by me to extend the ride a bit, but due to possible rain this was not risked...A slightly "select" group, we welcomed Clare, and daughter Emma, on their first ride - on a new bike and a newly acquired bike. Although the ride was not extended, there were still the two "off road" sections to challenge the riders. This time, the ride leader's bike resisted the temptation to get a puncture - unlike before!). This was after we "overtook" the 4* ride in West Hanney...... well I suppose they were having a rest.... Carin and Mandy then adjourned to the pub, whilst the rest of us turned back to Grove.
