After a thunder storm just after 5.00pm the sky cleared and the evening was dry just a few hardy annauls turned out for the ride. we enjoy a rather fast circuit . out to Denchworth, Lyford, Charney Bassett, Stanford in the Vale' Park lane, Asti- stud, Ddenchworth and back to Grove. It was nice to see that the cyclist that had started out in the 2* group were fast enough tonight to do a 3* ride.My thanks to Frank ,Des and Paul for sheltering me from a head wind on most of the ride.

Ride stats here: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/12648464.

Quite a breezy ride in the end. We all headed out of Grove in the direction of East Challow/Letcombes and then onto the crossroads at Childrey.

The climb up to Sparsholt Firs was a little interesting to say the least and at this point a few members of the group decided to stay in the lowlands (very wise!) where the wind was keeping well away.

The rest of us battled on to Lambourn, Upper Lambourn and Ashbury where we decided to change the route slightly and head into Shrivenham. Des led us through the 'back streets' (read residential area) of Shrivenham to avoid us being reversed into and then onto his house for a tea stop (note to self, make the route go past Des' house more often).

After being fed and watered, we coaxed our legs back into action to go back to Grove via Fernham, Baulking and Goosey. The slight tail wind gave us an excellent opportunity to put the hammer down on the stretch from Baulking to the A417 and no matter what the others tell you, they couldn't keep up with the only girl in the group.

A great afternoon and the wind wasn't so bad, after all.

A great last evening for the 3* ride that took a familiar route, but the wrong way round. the route went to Denchworth, Park Lane, Standford in the Vale, Pusey, Hinton Waldrist, Southmoor and the very long, very straight road back to West Hanney.

The straight provided plenty of opportunity to stretch the legs and show how much improvement some of us had actually made (and as for those two in full TT gear...I can't comment, because I couldn't see them for long!).

As darkness was falling the Fox at Denchworth beckoned and the end of term party began.
See you next year!

Report:
A beautiful balmy day in the Oxfordshire countryside. Met with City and Witney groups for elevenses and set off together through paths and lanes that certainly the Wantage contingent had not been down before initially led by Kev Hickman, thank you it was great. Perfectly rideable lanes and byways that many would dismiss as off road certainly smoother than a few roads in Oxon and Berks I can mention. A small smooth grass section negotiated by a variety of bikes from a race bike a recumbent a fixie and trad tourers, hardest part of the ride? The gate I made a complete struggle of opening, to everyones amusement. Definitely a CTC ride today, elevenses, lunch and tea, but it didn't matter this was about good company and a lovely Autumn day. Rose hips, hawberrys and the late blackberrys adorned the hedgerows, the lass behind the bar at lunch brought out her new road bike to show us and we bemoaned the ferry's' demise at Bablock Hythe. Ginny came to meet us for tea, badgered the boy on the gate to let her in as she was only going to the tea shop and shouldn't have to pay to see the gardens and house. Not only did she get in gratis but the lad apologised to the rest of us when we arrived as he thought he might have upset her. Nobody got left behind and not a trouser press in sight. Thank you for your company today, it was for me idyllic. England, autumn and we even won the cricket.

Report:
Well what a smashing afternoon it turned out to be !

I have to be honest and admit that the route involved a little bit of cheating on my part, being pretty much a carbon copy of my previous Saturday ride. To get round this little dilemma I decided to head the ride initialy in a Southerly direction and through the Letcombe Villages, rather than the obligatory Denchworth Goosey trail.

The countryside was really at it's most lovely, with the trees in transition from green to Autumn gold. With hardly a breeze we were able to make good time with ease, and arrived at Faringdon at 3.00pm for tea. The coffee shop had set aside a table for us inside, but the glorious weather persuaded us to make the best of it and share a couple of tables outside overlooking the market square.

It was very tempting to extend the homeward route, but I was aware that it would have pushed us significantly passed the 55km guideline for a Saturday leisure ride. Following a brief ascent and swoop down to Fernham, all that remained was a very gentle pedal home with glorious views of the Vale for company, illuminated by the low Autumn sun !....

Thanks for you company !
