A favourite tonight - Sweet spot plus. A series of intervals at an optimal workrate then pushing up into the 'somewhat uncomfortable' level for the final minute of the interval.

Great work everyone; good chats; and Nicole , you are queen of the Ikea or Cheese :D

An enjoyable evening's quizzing. A big thank you to Jan, Susan and Nick for setting rounds for us on Dates in Cycling History, Food and Drink, Name that Cartoon Tune, and Staying local (also cycling related). Some interesting questions and the honours were shared around.
Jan's final question concerned the location of 3 local CTC winged wheels - and revealed a new one for many of us. A suitable destination for a ride in 2021.

Good to see Chris again too.

Another enjoyable club social. Good to meet Lizzie, fresh from her first 100km ride, and to see Robin for the first time since his election as a Cycling UK Trustee. Congratulations to both.
Lizzie and Lee Ann shared their stories of how they got into cycling with the club - lovely to hear. There was discussion about social prescribing of cycling and walking as physical activities by local GPs, Bikeability training, and the missing link for safe cycling southwards from Chilton into West Berkshire.

The last led us on to West Berkshire Spokes campaign to develop the Didcot to Newbury railway line as a safe off-road cycle route. For those interested, Robin shared a link to a recent presentation on the scheme : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95bkrU_l4V8 (do scroll on to about 2mins 30s to skip the set-up discussion). Phase 1 of the scheme was completed in 2020 with the opening of a 3-km stretch of cycleway (the Eling Way) between Hampstead Norreys and Hermitage. Looking forward to cycling that way later this year.

Lorna and I enjoyed reminiscing about our holiday in the South-West of Scotland last August. Peter and Jan also shared their experiences of cycling in Dumfries and respective visits to Keir Mill and Drumlanrig castle. Sadly, the museum at Drumlanrig was closed due to covid last year, but Peter thoroughly recommended it for a return visit - apparently it has an exceptional bike collection including replica Macmillan bicycles old and new (see pic below).
We had an interesting discussion about the history of the bicycle, the merits of fixed-centre cycling holidays, LeJOG, luggage for gravel bikes and the delights of cycling in less visited places such as D&G and Northumberland.
Lovely to see Sally and Gerry, who joined us for the first time.
Thanks everyone for another enjoyable club social.

Negative splits this week with equal sets of 80%, 90% and 50% effort x 4. A good workout with the fitter riders even managing to carry on a conversation at 80% effort - good to see the social aspects of club riding translate into the virtual world ! :)

The accompanying quiz this week was on chocolate bar cross section recognition and amazingly all riders performed well but the chocoholic prize this week went to Yvonne (clap)

A big thank you to Sally for a really interesting evening, explaining and demonstrating lengthening and strengthening exercises for healthy muscles. In what proved to be quite an interactive session, some of us tried to follow at least some of the exercises from our own floors. A lot of fun and informative too. It was nice to see some less regular faces again and a warm welcome to Simon and Chris.
