Despite the promise of a gentle starter, with the wind at our back on the outbound leg, good progress was made around. The threat of a stiff headwind on the return leg didn't materialise, so we managed to keep going quite nicely on what was quite a gentle start to the season. It was great to see Dean back with us again after a long layoff due to injury.

12 of us left Grove (nearly on time - please make every effort to be ready to ride for 18:30 or risk being left behind on these shorter evenings) tackling the cheeky little climb through Challow to blow away the cobwebs. We took a break at the top to let the group regroup, cough up lungs and admire the view before taking the rollercoaster to Kingston Lisle, down Fawler Hill to Uffington. After Baulking there was a little spirited dash back to the main road before we returned via Goosey and Denchworth.

A nice little ride at a good pace, and I'm really pleased to say that the standard of group riding was excellent - well done everybody!

Entertainingly, the GPS trace below seems to think we took a detour via Sudan directly over the no-fly zone over Libya!

A short (ish!) ride from Grove through to Lockinge and Ardington, up the hill to Ginge and West Hendred. Everyone coped extremely well with the hill (it isn't that bad!) and then left onto the A417 with a dash down Lains Barn back to Grove.

The uphill sections were certainly outweighed by the lovely down hill sections on what turned out to be an awesomely lovely spring evening!

A chance to blow away the cobwebs and get your bike out for a gentle and sociable start to the riding season - this is a guest ride to which all are welcome. Note the 2pm start time.

We'll ride through the pretty villages of Denchworth and Lyford and then either up to Southmoor (longer) or down to the Hanneys (shorter) with a few short stops and a longer stop on Charney Bassett green for a drink and energy bars. The pace will be easy and no-one will be left behind.

Families and friends of club members and new riders are very welcome, although children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. There will be plenty of experienced hands to help with minor repairs or punctures. Please bring adequate clothing, sunblock and refreshments.

Regular Wantage Ride 3*
Leader:
Glen Savegar
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
80-100km all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, riding pace 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

Today we plan to head in an easterly direction for Streatley and Goring. Some hills (at a leisurely pace) on the outward leg, before dropping down to the Thames and crossing the picturesque bridge for lunch at Goring. Bluebells should be in abundance as we pass by wooded areas. A gentler, less hilly return, with an option for a tea stop at Wallingford or Milton Hill. We can decide on the day :)

Out- Wantage, Farnborough, West Ilsley, East Ilsley, Compton, Aldworth, Stichens Green, Streatley, Goring, (lunch).

Return- South Stoke, Wallingford, Brightwell cum Sotwell, Appleford, Sutton Courtenay, Drayton, Steventon, East Hendred, West Ginge, Ardington, Lockinge, Wantage.

Climbing Chain Hill out of Wantage on a beautiful spring morning made for an energetic start, but rewarded by the sight of vibrant yellow oil seed crops in the surrounding fields. A photo and water stop beckoned, followed by a left turn to head east on quiet undulating minor roads to Streatley and Goring. A short detour to take in the woods south west of Streatley revealed glorious carpets of Bluebells. Crossing the bridge over the Thames for lunch at The Catherine Wheel Goring, I realised we were running a little early for opening time. Following a quick team meeting it was decided to head for Pierrponts teashop instead, nicely positioned on the bridge. A very fine, and dare I say upmarket selection? of light lunches (decent portions though, and pretty good value!) were enjoyed outside in the lovely spring sunshine.

A big thankyou to John T post lunch, for recommending a very nice scenic alternative to my intended route to Wallingford. A few extra hills, but rewarded by great views. Well worth the effort.

Very soon we were zig zagging our way through Brightwell cum Sotwell, saying goodbye to Guy at the junction for Didcot, and heading for a very relaxed tea stop at Q Gardens, Milton Hill.

Climbing through East Hendred to join Cycle Network 44, and arriving back to Wantage via Larkhill to conclude a perfect day on the bike with excellent company!

Thanks everyone :)

It was a lovely route with magnificent spring views northwards across the county. I did resort to walking up a couple of the steeper sections but not quite enough to suggest I join the 'Ramblers Association' ! Many thanks for organising the ride.

Start Time:

Description:
This weeks ride will head off through the Letcombes up Hackpen Hill and then on towards Lambourn. After a nice long descent we turn right before Lambourn and make our way back up to the Ridgeway on the scenic route via Seven Barrows. We then carefully descend Blowing Stone Hill and make our way back to Grove via Kington Lisle and Goosey. This will be approx 23 miles and should be a great spring time test of the legs! Being a slightly longer route we will leave OMH promptly after 6.30pm. Lights would be advisable.

The group of 12 riders enjoyed perfect weather for this hilly 23 mile route completed in 1hr 45. Unfortunately Maurice punctured at Letcombe Regis and decided to complete his own ride. After a short stop at the top of Hackpen Hill the group were rewarded with the long downhill section towards Lambourn. The pace increased after Kingston Lisle and what Chris described as a "spirited dash" to the A417 last week, turned into a team time trial practice for some of us this week! There was an impromptu "sprint" entering Grove which was taken by Chris although hotly pursued by Nick! I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the scenery this week with everyone working hard and keeping together. Many thanks!

Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
A 33-mile afternoon ride at a riding pace of ~18km/h (11-13mph), with a tea stop, a few ups and downs (but no really major climbs), great views and some easy off-road.

We'll be heading West for tea at the Coleshill village store. Heading out via Charney Bassett and Hatford, we'll climb over the Hideaway to Littleworth and descend into the Thames Valley before climbing back up to Faringdon and on to Coleshill along the rolling B4019.

Directly after tea we'll follow a scenic track across Coleshill Park that will bring us out near Watchfield beneath the wind turbines. About 1 mile is easy off-road with a short stonier uphill stretch before rejoining tarmac for the last 1/2 mile up to the main road... From Watchfield, its a flattish run back through the Vale via Uffington, Baulking and Goosey.

Was it April or June? With temperatures in the mid 20s, a near cloudless sky and barely a breath of wind until late in the day, it was a perfect afternoon to be out on the bike. And the conditions were reflected in the excellent turnout of 15, despite several folk being away over Easter. Good to see Geoff out again and a warm welcome to Andy Johnson.

We followed the route as planned. The narrow lane from Hatford up to the Hideaway was new to most of the group, with one very notable exception - turned out that Andy had grown up there! The downside of this shortcut is a 400m stretch along the A420 before turning right into Littleworth. But once negotiated the reward is a superb long descent into the Thames Valley. We often come this way on a Sunday ride and turn ride at the junction with the A4095 to Radcot bridge en route to the Cotswolds. However, today (somewhat gratuitously on the leader's part) we turned left back up the hill into Faringdon. Jon and Chris rode off the front to attack the climb, shortly to be followed by Steve Q, who was supposed to be our sweeper...

The group became split in the Faringdon traffic and we regrouped near the top of the longish drag up to Badbury hill. Everyone sped down the other side and we were soon in Coleshill.

The village store, set amid old farm buildings of the Coleshill Estate, has a certain bucolic charm, and served large slices of cake. the first time I have been there and I'm sure we'll go again.

Everyone took the track through Coleshill Park and enjoyed the views - despite the temperature it was pretty clear today. Once back on the road, we enjoyed the gentle run down to Longcot and on to Uffington. Here Chris and Adrian continued on to Fawler and Blowingstone hills (hope you made it!) while the rest of us turned left to Baulking...

The group became split again after passing Baulking pit and when stopping to wait discovered that Steve, supposedly our sweeper was in the front group. At this point he was summarily fired! Fortunately the second group of 4 were together and no-one was being left behind.

We were back in Grove just after 5. It was an enjoyable ride to lead - thanks everyone for coming.

OK - so I completely changed my mind about the ride (again) in order to get back to the pub in reasonable time. We partly followed last week's route through the Letcombes, up Hackpen, down again to Sparsholt and along the villages to Uffington. We then added an extra loop out towards Fernham before setting a cracking pace back to the pub in Denchworth. A bit faster than we would normally consider decent, but it was a good group that stayed together extremely well. Thanks to everyone for a very enjoyable evening.

(oh, and the girls' alternative group did beat the men back to the pub, but only because they took a short cut...)

Unfortunately we lost Ian due to a broken chain in Wantage and a few minutes later David had to retire due to a puncture. Luckily both riders were close to the start so were able to make their way back.

The rest of the group enjoyed a leisurely paced ride down a few narrow tracks and around the country lanes, winding up at the pub in Denchworth where some of the group went home and the rest of us stayed for a well earned drink.

We followed the route as planned at a gentle pace stopping in Denchworth to look at the old village cross and on the far side of Goosey green to admire the meadows. But with a dropping temperature and a cooling breeze, it wasn't an evening to linger. We got back to the Fox just after 7:30, where 4 of us stopped for a drink while 4 led by Robin carried on back to Grove.

After enjoying a sociable beer, joined first by David, then Neil and later the 2* and 3* riders, we headed back to Grove before it got dark, Chris and Susan joining us for the ride.

Thanks to Steve B for sweeping. Hopefully see you all next week.

The threatened poor weather fortunately failed to materialise apart from some wind. Driving up on the A419 gave a little entertainment from the time-triallists who were getting buffeted by the wind and the passing lorries.

Fist incident was a great big bang coming from Des's back tyre, and the resulting inner tube having 6 or so holes in it! It was a useful breather anyway. Lunch was taken in the bakery at Northleach before immediately climbing a mean little hill on what is now becoming the "Walters after lunch hill test".

Beautiful Cotswold villages followed until the lurid honey-spot of Bourton-on-the-Water was reached. Quickly passing through, we all made it up the challenge of Little Rissington hill before some delightful lanes took us back to Whelford for a spirited dash back with the wind at our tail. Another puncture was much less dramatic in intensity, but the hissing sound went on for quite a while.

A long and tiring ride, quite often fighting the wind, but very enjoyable and rewarding. Well done for making it around, everyone.
