What a glorious way to end another summer season of evening rides.

Ten riders on a cool but bright and dry evening with glimpses of the Sun. We took a steady pace through Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to Uffington and then everyone was set free to make their own way to the top of Dragon Hill.

Fantastic climbing from everyone and fantastic views from the top with distant Sun rays glinting off the scenery laid out before us 8)

After taking it all in and snapping a few photos we headed down via Woolstone back to Uffington. To keep the distance reasonable with the limited daylight we returned the same way. With the group riding strongly I slowly cranked up the pace through Baulking and it was very pleasing to see the whole group keeping up right to the A417 junction.

Summer fitness at its peak :)

A quick dash back via Denchworth and back to Grove just after 8pm.

Well done everyone, another successful season of 3* rides. Thanks to all the riders, sweepers and leaders. (beer)

LIGHTS A MUST FOR THE LAST RIDE OF THE SEASON!

Denchworth, Goosey, Baulking, Uffington, Compton Beauchamp, Ashbury. Group at top of hill. Descend and ride as a group to Lambourn. Taking a direct route via B4001 descending Hackpen. Regroup back via Letcombes, Wantage and Grove.

The final summer ride has come along too quickly with the sun setting earlier. Seven set out with two new riders which hopefully proves that 4* has been resounding success.

We made good pace out to Uffington but as the leader left his garmin at home you`ll have to take my word for that .Next followed the Compton Beauchamp climb which Peter achieved a top ten on strava, no guesses who was last!

Moving swiftly up Ashbury Hill followed by a chase down to Lambourn and the climb back up to the Hackpen descent, where we all re grouped before a leisurely pace back to Wantage with still some light approximately 50k in 1:45 minutes.

Well done to all the riders who have joined to make 4* an established group.

10 Mile Club 1* 1*
Leader:
Sara Ward
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

Looking forward to a leisurely ride around a pleasant and flat local route. We will head out from OMH to Denchworth and then loop round through Lyford, Charney Bassett and back via Asti Stud. Pretty much exactly 10 miles (17km).
Please remember to bring lights as the evenings are drawing in.

A fitting end to the excellent summer Tuesday evening series.
11 riders set out from Grove and enjoyed a very sociable roll around to Lyford, dipping into the seldom seen village and back via Charney Bassett. One black cloud did its best to threaten us but we stayed completely dry!

Along the route, the Paine family, shared tales of their recent cycle touring holiday in the Highlands and Islands - particular thanks to Ben who remembered an impressive list of the places they visited. We arrived back in Denchworth in good form and said farewell to those who were 'pausing' at the Fox for supper.

Tony, Jessica, Phil and I returned to Grove before 8pm under possibly the best sunset sky of the season.

Indeed a fitting end to the 1* Tuesday rides for another year - with the highest turnout of the season. Perhaps we should have end-of-season rides more often?! ;-)
Thanks to all of those who have led or swept the rides this summer, and thanks to Sara who led her first ride for us this evening.
Over the season we have had about 30 riders joining us on one or more occasions and as always the rides have been relaxed and fun. Don't forget that our easy rides continue throughout the year on the 3rd Saturday afternoon of the month. They are a great way to introduce family and friends to cycling. All are welcome. See you there!

Lower on numbers tonight, but we decided to make up for it with a longer than normal ride and it turned in to our first proper Autumn ride: damp, slippery and (by the end) dark. Excellent!

Starting with Crab Hill, we found it nicely pruned (thank you Richard P!) so no unfortunate bramble encounters. Then it was up the Ridgeway, down the other side (Ice Valley) up again and south through the woods to Redlane Barn and down again via the twisty-turny (and slippery) track.

Then up the Ridgeway again and down Hawthorns. By this time it was getting quite dark and we decided that we'd get more light and less mud on the ridge top than the bottom. So we went over to Chilton and up the Ridgeway again! Along and back down the way we'd come.

Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove 3*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.

This is a re-run of last year's special route into the centre of Oxford. A steady pace through Charney Bassett, Appleton and Cumnor, down the hill to Botley. Then the cunning car-free entry to Oxford via bike tracks and beautiful river sides (suitable for all bikes). Private venue tea stop courtesy of St Cross College (with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles). Then along the river path to Iffley, Kennington and back via Sunningwell and Fyfield. 40 miles - an easy but interesting 3* ride, with easy terrain - suitable for 2* riders as well. Don't miss this one!

Report:
The weather was not promising at the start, but fortunately got better as the afternoon went on. A good group gathered, and a particular welcome to April on her first ride with us.

We had an unexpected headwind to Cumnor, but finally dropped into the Thames Valley and enjoyed the back tracks and river side entry to Oxford. NCN5 - the allegedly major national cycle route through the centre of this great cycling city was, as usual, deeply disappointing and chaotic! But we made it to the oasis of calm at St Cross College and the fine cafes of St Giles, so all was well for the tea stop.

We headed out of town via Broad St, Turl St and St Aldates and along the river - enjoying the sight of some enthusiastic 8's practicing going on.

As time was wearing on, we split into smaller groups but we all got back safely to Grove. Well done to April on by far her longest ride to date!

Thanks to all for a fun ride.

Cotswold Ride 3*
Leader:
Chris Walters
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
Cerney Wick - Cotswold Outdoor store
Description:
Taking in a different aspect of the Cotswolds, this has major climbing during the morning in the areas of Nailsworth, Stroud and Birdlip (yep - that one!), with an undulating but easier afternoon.

No specific lunch stop planned - we'll stop as and when suits the group, so bring enough food to keep you going. May do a formal lunch stop, or a couple of brief stops.

105km with 1100+m of climbing - please be sure of your climbing abilities before signing up for this one.

Report:
It was clearly a chilly start for John and Adam who cycled over from home, but for the sane ones, after a coffee, it was plenty warm enough.

There was an excellent climb from Nailsworth, with hairpins and everything. Even the cafe towards the top had marbled toilets and a magnificent cake selection. Five of us enjoyed the facilities while waiting for the "off the front = off the ride" contingent to come back and rejoin us.

A speedy descent into Stroud was a great precursor to our second climb of the day. Karen was most disappointed that the flat section half way up was only half way up... still, we all made it.

A quick stop for provisions on the outskirts of Gloucester and then we were off up the main event. Most people managed it without the odd stroll. It was rather tough though.

Crossing over into the Cotswolds proper, John found us a fantastic picnic spot, and we had an impromptu family picnic moment (well, there were two Wards).

Some great descents followed, and then the easiest 20mph I've ever done on the flat brought us back to the start, for ice-creams.

Well done everyone, some tough climbs today!

Out via Chain Hill to Lockinge, up Goddard's Brook and then west to Furzewick Farm before climbing up to the Ridgeway. A blast along the top was followed by an even faster one down Wether Down and Ice Valley before the slog back up to Scutchamer's Knob. Saturday Morning Off-road Ride 2*
Leader:

Start Time:
10:00 am
Start Location:
Goblin's Glen layby off A4130
Description:
Our monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. Held on the second Saturday of each month, we start from various locations to take in some of the best tracks in the south of the County.

This one delves into the hillier parts of the Chilterns from the 'Goblin's Glen' layby just east of Wallingford (see link).

The ride will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road. The terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. We aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home).

A delightful ride on a lovely September afternoon. A warm welcome to Martin, Louise, Marielle and Maeve on their first ride with us. Martin had joined us for the ride in Oxford last month and this time he brought the family along. Quite a sight to see a recumbent trike pulling a buggy. Several riders tried out Martin's 'bent and now want one for Christmas!

The Forget Me Not Cafe run on Saturdays in Uffington Village Hall (not to be confused with teas in the church on Sundays) is a delight. They are very accommodating (we were able to move tables out onto the grass for our tea), the cakes are great and all served with attention to detail - china cups, cake stands and linen napkins. Recommended. See Tea & Cake list for details.

Thanks everyone for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Regular Sunday Ride [from Grove] 3*
Leader:
Nick Dunton
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
This is a re-run of the 3* I led last year for the 90th Anniversary of the Oxford DA, this time – unfortunately - without afternoon tea at Standlake. Note that the ride starts at Grove. We will take a northerly direction through Buckland, Aston, Crawley, Stonesfield, Ditchley Park, Spelsbury, and a lunch stop at The Bull in Charlbury @ 60km [www.bullinn-charlbury.com]. After lunch, we will head south through Fawler, North Leigh, Witney, Stanton Harcourt, Standlake, Longworth and West Hanney. Total distance = 106km. No major hills, although the road rolls quite a lot around Charlbury – total climb = 710m. We’ll be riding at “Sunday touring pace” – approx. 20kph average. Definitely a ride of thirds: first and last third flat, middle third much lumpier. Speeds matched: we were often bowling along in the high 20s on the flatter sections. The weather was decided autumnal - cool with mist and overcast skies for much of the ride relieved by a couple of hours of sunshine around lunchtime. The Bull Inn couldn’t cater for the whole group, so some volunteers made do with sandwiches from the Co-Op while the rest of us dined in style. I must re-think the lunch venue when we do this ride again, and try and work-out a coffee stop mid-morning! There was a minor touch of wheels whilst negotiating the outskirts of Witney, resulting in Richard and Adrian essaying an interesting pas-de-deux which, unfortunately, no one caught on film. No serious damage and we all made it home safe in time for rugby and Grand Prix watching. Good ride and thank you all for your company.

While the rain of the afternoon might have put off some potential off-roaders, an intrepid 6 nonetheless set off from OMH for an introduction to the tracks around Wantage. The route up Crab Hill proved to be very slippery with some slick mud but was successfully negotiated by all. The group then headed up Goddard's Brook to the Ridgeway in the gathering gloom, with lights finally required for the last climb up through Bitham Woods. Still feeling fresh the group then turned east along the Ridgeway before descending the swoopy gravel track that is Coldharbour Road towards Lockinge. Another transit of Crab Hill, this time down and in full darkness, meant muddy bikes on arrival back at OMH.
In total we did 20km and almost 200m of climbing at speeds about 2/3 of the normal for the MTB group. A good time was had by all, and a special BZ (naval-speak for "Well done" ) goes to 13 year old Ellie who surpassed herself on what was a challenging introduction to off-roading.

Well...A really lovely afternoon ! A great group, end to end sunshine and hardly a breeze, making for a good steady pace. There was however a noticeable chill in the air as a sure sign of autumns arrival.

Tea stop was at Letcombe Regis cafe, ideally located for an end of ride cuppa where fading winter light is a factor. Today though this wasn't an issue, and enabled us to sit outside and enjoy the beautifully clear autumn light.

And so onto the homeward leg...Approaching Lockinge it seemed a shame to not take full advantage of the fab weather on offer, so a loop of Ardington village felt like the best option, before the well earned descent passing Laines barn, and the remaining few miles back to Old Mill Hall.

Thanks everyone for your company ! :-)

CTC Oxfordshire Explorer Ride from Witney 2*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
Witney Buttercross
Description:
CTC Oxfordshire's September Explorer Ride is hosted by CTC Witney and will be taking us along the beautiful Windrush Valley (passing through Minster Lovell, Burford and Sherborne) to Northleach for a refreshment stop before returning through the Southern Cotswolds.

This is a real cycle tourist's route with some lovely narrow country lanes, pretty Cotswold villages, scenic views and a few ups and downs on the way, but nothing major (and with the bigger climbs before lunch and most of the descending afterwards).

The round trip is nearly 47 miles, with an option or two for a coffee or beer stop on the way back.

Our ride leader will be Neil Tigwell. (neiltig19@googlemail.com 01993 702317)

Please let either Steve or Neil know if you are thinking of coming so that we have some idea of numbers.

6 of us enjoyed the final CTC Oxfordshire Explorer ride of the season. Des and I joined Witney regulars Neil, Kevin and Mark plus Julian making a very welcome return on a club ride. Good to see you Jools!
A lovely route on a gloriousy sunny day, taken at a steady pace and with two new cafes for some of us - the Sherborne village store, where we stopped for Bacon Butties, and the village shop in Coln St. Aldwyns.
One of the features of early autumn is the clearness of the air and the views along the Windrush valley were just glorious as we cycled steadily westwards from Witney. Neil introduced me to a lovely cut-through at Crawley, which, making use of a 20-yard section of bridleway, cuts a huge chunk off the corner of the road to Minster Lovell. We progressed steadily through Asthall Leigh, Swinbrook, Burford, Little Barrington and Windrush, reminding me just why this is one of my favourite areas to cycle in Oxfordshire The original plan was to stop in Northleach as Neil had expected the Sherborne cafe to be very busy (it is very popular with cyclists and walkers during the summer, apparently). However, on arrival there were tables free, so we stopped. And very pleasant it was too, sitting in the Autumn sunshine with good coffee and bacon butties, for less than a fiver.
Mark (who'd had a cold decided to return from here) but the remaining 5 of us continued southwards (avoiding Northleach) to Coln for our second stop at a second community shop (this was real cafe to cafe cycling). Eventually we dragged ourselves away, continuing through Hatherop to the Eastleaches. It came as something of a shock to see no-one sitting outside the Victioria Arms - another village pub, and a much frequented lunch destination over the years, gone!
As we continued on through Filkins, Langford and the gated road to Clanfield, the wind picked up in our faces, and we kept in close formation for most of the ride back to Witney. We were back in Witney about 2:45. Thanks to Neil, for an enjoyable day out.
