Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. This week we will be riding to East Challow then Childrey via a well surfaced bridleway, then back to OMH via Goosey. There is a very short section on the A417. |

Riders:Karen TownsinNaomi Merritt Nicky Clark Robert Treadgold (deceased) Sheena Arnold Riders = 5 Weather:Report:A select group of 5 riders tonight. We set off towards East Challow only to be passed later by the bemused 3* group wondering how we'd got there before them!!A couple of stops at the duck pond in Childrey and the green in Goosey made for a relaxed and sociable evening. Thanks all for your company and welcome to Rob on his first ride with Cycling UK Wantage. | ||

Leader:Nicole Pethybridge |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. This is a bridging ride at the lower level of the range to encourage riders who feel ready to move up to the next star level This ride will take us out through Southmoor, over the footbridge to Hinton Waldrist. We will return via Pusey. Flat and approx 17 miles at an easy low level 2* pace. We should return before sunset but please bring lights. |

Riders:Bethany TranterBrian Hipwell David Paine Ellie Paine John Culverwell John Tranter Lorna Swanton Mike Bailey Nicole Pethybridge Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Tony Clark Val Smith Riders = 13 Weather:Report:A good group of riders aiming to enjoy a 2 star ride for the first time or returners looking for a gentle evening ride to ease them back into the summer season.Whilst clouds threatened it stayed dry and we all headed off through Denchworth for an anti-clockwise ride north or Grove. A good pace was maintained by all as people experienced a 2 star for the first time and found it all very manageable. The only mis hap was when Brian became over enthusiastic about finding his fortune by stopping abruptly to pick up a five pound note in the road. His exuberance was then matched by John Ts exasperation as he went into the back of him and came down on the verge. No actual damage done and I think John T pocketed the £5 for his trouble Over the sneaky A420 bridleway between Southmoor and Hinton Waldrest and we were into the home straight. Returning across the A420 the group picked up pace towards Denchworth & home, happy in their achievements of the evening. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. This is a bridging ride at the lower level of the range to encourage riders who feel ready to move up to the next star level. This week we are going to have a very gentle introduction to Hackpen Hill. We'll make our way through the Letcombes, pausing at the top of Holborn Hill to admire the view and catch our breath before on to the piece de resistance: Hackpen. Everyone will go up at their own pace and have time at the top to enjoy the gorgeous views before swooping down to Sparsholt and a potter round the Vale before returning to Grove. |

Riders:Barry StantonDavid Smith David Talboys Des Higgs Eddie Little Jan McCabe Jane John Jo Little John Groves Karl Blake Katherine Boyce Mike Cooke Sara Ward Sharon Bedford Steve Joyce Susie Turnbull Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 18 Weather:Report:It was really good to see 2* riders out on a bridging ride, trying out a 3* and prepared to do hills as well! Great start to a lovely ride.We managed to cross Wantage without too many problems. The temporary traffic lights on Ham Road were kind to us. A regroup on the Letcombe road and we were off to our first hill - Holborn. This was swiftly dispatched with no problems at all. Onwards to Hackpen and Eddie showed us how it should be done! At the top we lingered to catch the fabulous views of the Vale, no one in a hurry to drop back down to the Vale. We did eventually, all missing the new potholes on the road to Sparsholt, a big contrast to the wonderfully smooth road down from Childrey to the A417. The small groups of riders regrouped on the Goosey road before we finished off with a small circuit of the Vale. For much of our ride, it was clear that we had just missed a major downpour. Those of us without mudguards paid the price with muddy bikes! Rather that than a sodden group With such a big group, David and Ursula kindly led a second wave of us when we were on the busy roads to ensure we caused minimal road chaos. A lovely friendly ride, thank you all for contributing. | ||

Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at an average riding pace of ~25km/h (16mph). May be hilly. This is a bridging ride at the LOWER level of the range to encourage riders who feel ready to move up to the next star level. Donovan's "Mello Yellow" (1967) is an inspiration for this ride. C'mon and feel the 4* breeze folks - but not too much of it as you'll be tucked in nicely, following a wheel won't you? Actually, as the song says "Born high forever to fly, Wind velocity nil" we might even get dreamy evening float conditions, we'll see ? We're heading East towards the Power Station (hat tip to Robert Palmer) on a shorter 44km loop. Lumps and bumps predominantly in the first half, on at times narrow and gravel-strewn lanes, opening out to delicious smooth tarmac around Milton Park in a rare urban dalliance. The final section is a flat run-in to build the tension culminating with the Denchworth Dash to give the full 4* experience . At a relaxed average speed of ~25kph (range 16-40kph) it should take us to around 8:15pm to get round, well before dusk. Lights and spares are de rigueur, appropriate clothing/drinks etc for the day is up to you - I'm not your Mum !! Come expecting some closer formation/group riding (its both efficient & collegial), concentration, clear "hazard calling" and a good workout. We chat too, but only when all the other bases are covered Any queries please do get in touch, we don't bite, honest! |
||
Riders:Frank SchroerJason Jones Jerry Bird Paul Jarvis Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Sian Mitchell Riders = 7 Weather:Report:We welcomed Sian Mitchell (yet another of the enthusiastic Hendred Posse) to the 4* fold and headed out in cool, grey but dry conditions. Early climbing up past Lains Barn showed the group to be all feeling up for giving it a bit of a tickle, so we pushed on to negotiate challenging lanes-surfaces en route to Ginge. Marginally smoother tarmac on the A417 was met with a pacy run to Rowstock and the jiggle to take in Harwell Village. Didcot marked our Eastern limit and we turned to begin the push for home through Milton Park, surviving some erratic motorists and recrossing the A34 to knock off the final climb up above Steventon. The Hanney Road and a lanes detour via Lyford brought us rattling towards Denchworth and the much anticipated Dash, which appeared to be keenly contested although I was by this time well out of position to pronounce a victor. A 5 minute advance on our predicted Grove return suggested a solid (<2 min stationary time), but oftentimes conversational pace had been maintained throughout the cooling evening, tick boxWell done all on completing a route through what at times resembled minefields or a moonscape without any mechanicals or mishaps. Persistent & clear hazard calling helped enormously, thanks. Roll on Summer eh ? | ||

3* Saturday Afternoon Ride | 3* |

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.A lumpy one this time exploring quiet lanes in Wiltshire and Berkshire. We head out via the Letcombes and Hackpen Hill, through Lambourn and Aldbourne to Ramsbury where we'll stop at Bella's for refreshments. Then it's back into the Lambourn valley, partially retracing the outward route before branching off for Seven Barrows and Kingston Lisle. Then it's the usual way home through Goosey and Denchworth. I shall be pacing myself up the hills so we will be pausing at the top of the climbs. In order to enjoy the route and appreciate the sceney, and given the amount of climbing, I shall be aiming at an average pace of 20-21kph for the ride, so lower end of 3* pace. 72km with 675m of climbing |

Bella's was well timed, coming after 4 of the 6 climbs had been ticked off, and whilst the weather was at its most pleasant. Meeting the Hendred posse on their bike touring weekend meant that the cafe was pretty overrun with cyclists which felt good too. Thanks everyone for an enjoyable and sociable afternoon. Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Novices Off-Road Ride CANCELLED | 1* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:97, The Causeway, Steventon |
Description:Sorry to cancel this ride at the last minute, but I have been very sick today. Please let me know if you wanted to come and I will rearrange it on another date. RobinA return of the well-received special ride for those beginning or wanting to learn a bit more about off-roading. It starts with a 'teach in' and ends with a short but pleasant ride. We'll start at my house with a bike check, and check out tyre pressures and suspension settings. (There should be enough car parking on my drive). Second we'll do a 2 mile loop up Steventon Hill and back down, which provides a chance to learn the key off-road skills for climbing, descending and going down singletrack in the woods like a Jedi. Third, for those who would like to, we'll ride a 10-mile loop up to The Ridgeway and back to sample a bigger climb and a bigger descent and put all those skills into practice. I will adjust this to suit the group on the day. See last year’s report here: http://www.ctcwantage.org.uk/rides.php?id=2753 |

Blowingstone - White Horse Audax | 3* |
---|
Leader:David Smith |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Uffington Village Hall |
Description:This popular ride over a tough but spectacular route is excellently organised by Nick Dunton. Anyone who enters should have the route sheet/GPS trace with them so they can manage independently on the day, but I will be leading a 'ride within a ride' for those who prefer to keep together in the traditional club ride manner. Please do follow the link below and enter in advance if at all possible. Now in it's 4th year of running, this popular but tough 100km audax is organised by Cycling UK Wantage. Note the event is run under Audax UK regulations and there is a [small] fee payable if you want to ride. While we will accept entries on the day, it would help enormously if you can pre-enter via the Audax UK website [see link below], and pay via PayPal. That way, you also receive the route description ahead of time and can prepare, and we can ensure there is enough cake at the finish for everyone! For details and entry please see: http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/17-588/ |

Riders:Adrian WestDavid Smith Hugh Falkner Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Lucia Singer Michael Brooke Nick Stokell Peter Cowan Richard Saunders Ursula Hallam Riders = 12 Weather:Report:A dry, cool and breezy day welcomed what looked a full house of riders to Uffington for one of our Wantage calendar classics. A bout of sickness meant a few club regulars couldn’t make it – get well soon, guys. Having said our goodbyes to the 4* peloton at the start, we settled into a comfortable pace up Blowingstone and Spring, through the delightful Savernake section to climb again at Clench Common. Arriving at Marlborough in good time for lunch, the café looked busy so we found an oasis of calm in the church café instead. The afternoon brought a few more hills and views as we yo-yoed with several other groups along the way. Finally, we enjoyed some faster sections as we turned away from the wind. As we appreciated the homeward approach with the views of the white horse, we toyed briefly with the idea of including Dragon Hill, but tea and cake beckoned. I understand it’ll be part of the route next year - look forward to that! Thanks to Nick for organising and his crew for manning the controls, catering and keeping the tea flowing. | ||

Description:I think the time has come to gently introduce one of the classic local hills - Hackpen. We will head out around Wantage to the Letcombes and then tackle the ascent up to the Ridgeway on Hackpen Hill. Don't worry - everyone will go at their own pace and we will re-group for a breather at the top. Your reward will be a huge sense of achievement, great views and a lovely swoop down to Sparsholt. Then we'll work along the contours to Kingston Lisle for another great descent into the Vale and an easy route home via Goosey and Denchworth.20 miles / 30km |

Riders:Adrian WestBrian Hipwell David Paine Des Higgs Ellie Paine John Tranter Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Well, the pretty awful weather forecast clearly put a few people off and we ended up running a joint 1* / 2* ride. In the event, although we had a few spots of rain, nothing terrible materialised, so I think we were lucky. Steamy though! The hills all worked out fine including the great Hackpen, and the reward was lovely views across the Vale towards Oxford and Didcot, plus the great descent towards Sparsholt. The various Paines split off to head home having ridden out to Grove in the first place (great effort) and then - remarkably, Steve Swanton had a puncture! Basically, this never happens as Steve is renowned for running a bombproof machine with some of the chunkiest road tyres in the club. But sure enough we found a very serious flint mini axe head stuck in the tyre. Essential repairs also proved to be necessary to Steve B's quick release skewer, so all in all we had a bit of a mechanical moment in Sparsholt. To compensate for the delays, we cut the ride short and headed straight back to Goosey, Denchworth and home. Thanks to all for your company - a mellow ride in the lovely Vale! | ||

Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A scenic trip to Didcot and the NR5 cycle-path behind the power station. This is a wildlife haven and alive with rabbits and red kites [good opportunity to practise bunny-hopping!]. Route is fully surfaced and fine for road bikes. However, we’ll also take the cycle path between Ginge and East Hendred which is rough in places. Fairly flat route of 46.7km, so aiming for a reasonable pace. Note: in places this route uses busier roads than the majority of our rides, so best to avoid if you dislike riding in traffic. |

Riders:Andy PixtonBarry Stanton Eddie Little John Groves Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Karen Townsin Karl Blake Katherine Boyce Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Sharon Bedford Riders = 12 Weather:Report:It was a pleasure to lead such a well-disciplined group of riders! The threatened rain didn’t materialize and wet-weather gear was mostly abandoned at the top of the first hill. I had forgotten my eye-protection: not a good idea on probably the buggiest ride of the year so far. Welcome to Charlie Schmidt – JG’s friend from Zimbabwe – who was well able to keep up with us, even on a mountain bike. I fear we didn’t show him the prettiest parts of Oxfordshire! We spotted Louis Hall adding dog-walking kilometres to his Strava account in Lockinge. The transit of Didcot was relatively quiet and uneventful. Once off the Power Station cycle-path, we picked-up the pace through the flatlands of Drayton, Steventon, and the Hanneys, leading to a spirited Denchworth dash. The jinx of Jane’s Junction returned but no damage was done to either rider or bike. My Garmin reported 46.9 km at an average speed of 23.2 kph – very respectable given the mix of paths and urban roads traversed. Thanks Andy for sweeping. | ||

Easy Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs. A slightly longer Saturday afternoon 1* ride this month, but with a couple of options to cut it shorter depending on the group and conditions. (And with he amount of rain falling this week, I may shorten to omit the off-road stretch of NCN544 into the Harwell Campus, which may become muddy).Plan A is to follow Sustrans route NCN544 through to the Harwell campus, and there take the newly-built Wiinnaway cyclepath down into Harwell village. We'll have a refreshments stop at Q-gardens at the top of Steventon Hill just over halfway. We'll return via Steventon, the Hanneys and Denchworth. Depending on the prevailing wind, we may decide to take the route clockwise instead. There are three of stretches of track en route, which are manageable on all but the stiffest of road bikes with narrow tyres. |

One dry and one very wet! With a stiff SW breeze and showers forecast, the reverse route out via the Hanneys seemed the sensible option. We had a very pleasant ride out through Denchworth to West Hanney, where we stopped by the church. There was a wedding in progress and we had to reassure the photographer waiting outside that we weren't going to be in his pictures. We continued on to East Hanney, where Lorna left us, and then out across Cow Common to Steventon pursued by threatening clouds. The idea of a tour around Steventon was vetoed in favour of getting to the tea room at Q-gardens in the dry. There were only a few drops of rain during our tea stop and with some blue sky to the SW, I was hoping that luck might be on our side. It wasn't to be. The rain caught us in East Hendred. We stopped for a few minutes under two large trees to don waterproofs and in the hope that the shower might pass. But we needed to press on. After a brief lull, the heavens really opened... and Martin (on recumbent) got his umbrella out! Despite the soaking, spirits remained high and there aren't many prettier routes to give you a lift than the road from Ginge through to Wantage. Of course the rain petered out as we returned to Grove and the sun even appeared right at the end too. Great to see Mandy riding so confidently on her new bike and to see Mavis out again. Thanks everyone for your company on a ride we'll definitely remember... | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 2* |

Leader:Nicole Pethybridge |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. To replace the Touring Taster there will be an all day 2* touring ride. Expected to be 65 miles but taken at 2* pace this will stretch the legs in a relaxed fashion. Only two 'hilly' sections one on the rise out to Highworth and Blundsden and then the final climb through Faringdon when we are almost home. In between we have some relatively flat or undulating sections. Plan to stop at Highworth and South Cerney - Cotswold water park for coffee and lunch (for about an hour each time) and the option to stop in the afternoon if we wish. This will be an all day ride but hopefully a pleasant one Tea and Lunch stops included. Expect to return between 5 and 6 pm |

Riders:Barry StantonEddie Little John Tranter Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Karen Townsin Karl Blake Mike Bailey Nicole Pethybridge Olivia Pile Richard Pethybridge Susie Turnbull Riders = 12 Weather:Report:12 riders congregated for the touring 2* all day ride. Despite a soaking all week the weather was very kind to us and whilst most had some sort of wind proof for a while we all remained dry and comfortable.A steady pace was soon settled into as we made our way out of the vale and over to Highworth. Unfortunately the recently reconnoitred cafe in Highworth had chosen not to renew their lease and closed. A kindly local pointed us in the direction of the coop which also had a cafe. Once they had brought on a few more staff to deal with our sudden arrival it proved a very suitable stop. On the move again we broke onto groups for the stretch over to Blunsden and then swooped down amongst the housing development of north Swindon. Out onto the Cotswold water park the roads were lovely and new scenery for most, occasionally marred by some nutty drivers. However it was a pleasant route and we made it to the Water Park Cafe and managed to secure a large table and a very nice lunch. After lunch the roads and almost non existent drivers were easy and we made excellent progress to Lechlade and Farringdon. Home with at least an hour to spare it had been a very enjoyable day with only 366 metres of climbing in 104 Km. | ||

We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.The forecast is looking much more promising this week! So having abandoned our planned route to Betterton last Tuesday, we'll try it this week instead. It is one of my favourite 1* loops through glorious scenery and a real confidence booster for some gentle climbing and descending. We'll head out through Charlton and pick up the Sustrans Route 544 near the Nelson PH. We'll continue to Lockinge , where we'll stop to admire the statue of a famous local resident. There is a gentle climb up to Betterton where we'll turn off for Ardington. We'll stop for a rest at the top of the hill to take in the views before enjoying the long descent into the village. We'll return to Grove via Lains Barn, with a second climb and then a second long descent into the vale to enjoy. There is no rush on the climbs and everyone can ride at their own pace. It's a round trip of about 9 miles. |

About 35km/21miles with a couple of gentle and short rises at East Challow and Westcot. There is a small section of bridleway, though this is well surfaced and easy to ride. |

May be hilly. This week we're heading out west via Goosey, Hatford and Shellingford to enjoy the show of Hawthorn trees north of Compton Beachamp (they ere a little disappointing on the trial ride!). Back via Uffington and Denchworth. The short climb up to Knighton is the only respite from the otherwise pan flat Vale The distance of 45k over fairly flat terrain should get us back to OMH before 8.30 pm. |

An evenly matched group set off at a mid - upper 3* pace to cover the 46 kilometres in good time. Traffic was scarce and the roads were enjoyably quiet. Sadly scarce also was the hawthorn showing north of Compton BeachampAdrian and Des had cycled to the start from home so peeled off mid-ride (but not before the only climb of the evening !). Karl suffered a puncture on the way down from Knighton, which meant we could all enjoy the lovely evening and the pleasant company of the cows! We picked up the pace on the second half of the ride and everyone seemed to manage the increase with Jane heading the group down the homeward (Denchworth) stretch . We got back a little later than planned at 8.45 after a very pleasant ride indeed. Thanks to all for enjoying it with me and thanks to Dave for sweeping. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly.A #Diamond ride of two halves that we ran last year in cold drizzle, it deserves better! A pan flat Rihanna-style bland opening to settle us into a useful rhythm , switching to undulations better matched to the guttural Shirley Bassey, comprising three short punchy climbs at Steventon, Upton & West Hendred , each of which is followed by gentle downslopes, the last of which should give us a glorious early-summer sun-drenched scenic finale through the Lockinges Sunset shouldn't be a problem by now, but FRONT & REAR lights are required for gloomy/overcast/wet evenings & will be welcome as we run in through the heavily shadowed Lockinge woodlands. |

Notwithstanding a distinct wobble, the offending wheel held sufficiently true to complete the ride. Climbs were enlivened at Steventon (by an irrational and impatient elderly driver) and Upton (by an errant flint-based puncture). By the time we reached the final rise up from West Hendred a distinctly recreational feel had fallen over the group and we chattered happily all the way back through the Lockinges. A distinctly mellow ride in glorious conditions, that being said we still cranked round at over 28kph. Thanks all for a cracking evening’s entertainment. Report:Despite the good weather, it was a surprisingly small group of four of us tonight. Although others took up the challenge of the 2 star. However, this made for a wonderful relaxed ride in the sunshine. Several relaxed "chat" stops - some at impromptu moments (not that we were not talking as we rode along!!) Due to this, we were comparatively late back (8.20pm) to Grove. Was wonderful to maximise the long sunny evening, and were even able to reminisce about holidays past, of lovely memories.... and we also discussed bathroom refurbishments - does the excitement ever end?? Thanks to all three of you for a lovely ride - enjoyed your company - and so a very easy ride to lead, and to round off, I joined other riders back at the pub. Cannot be bad.... | ||

Welcome to Claire on her first ride with us and riding a road bike for the first time too. We rode steadily out to Southmoor, crossing the A420 for the first time using the bridleway bridge. Then turning eastwards, we benefitted from the breeze on our backs as we followed the watershed road (as I call it) out to Appleton. We had a rest by the war memorial, the pond proving not to be so picturesque this year due to the green algae. The cut-through and A420 crossing south of the village were new to everyone and after a short stretch on the A338 we were soon back on quieter roads, continuing through Tubney to take the underpass under the A420 into Fyfield, where we crossed the A-road for the fourth time,. At Fyfield layers were added as the evening was cooling, but soon the sun finally broke through properly to bathe us in golden evening light. Unfortunately, we couldn't linger as we needed to get to the pub, and we arrived at 8:48 just in time for some of us to eat. Well done to those completing their longest rides so far of the season. It didn't save and now its a week later and this is not going to be a brilliant ride reportWith 22 people gathered for a 3* evening ride and 2 more joining us in Denchworth, it was good that Karen stepped forward to lead half the ride. Half of us set off, waving to Yvonne as she waited for the second group and having swept up Jan into our group continued briskly through Goosey and over the 417 to the Baulking turn. A brief regrouping and we were through Baulking and over to the Fernham road. Before we knew it, we were no longer having a bit of a battle with a headwind and back over the 417 and on to Pusey. A safe crossing of the A420 through to the bridge to Southmoor and only minor grumbles at my choosing the sandy narrow track to reach the main road! The beautiful tarmac of the Hanney Road tempted Kirsten, Hugo and Adrian to try some racing but it was too mellow an evening for that to work! Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph).HILLY - GEAR, CLOTHE & FUEL accordingly for ~700m vertical please. This is a LONG/TOUGH ride - LIGHTS required, in case of mechanicals etc. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. Heading South of the M4 tonight & "down to the river (Pang) we'd ride" as Mr Springsteen sang. Weather permitting, tonight will see us head off up the 4 pitches of Chain Hill, regrouping as necessary at the very top (Lockinge Kiln Farm driveway). From there via the short sharp Ilsley climbs to Compton's formidable Applepie Hill. Relief follows in a fast & exciting descent, taking a careful right at The Four Points, dropping past the tropical jungles of Wyld Ct. Farm towards Hampstead Norreys. A sharp left here onto deliciously narrow gravelly lanes alongside the Pang for a good while (banana time ) until we break West to begin climbing again towards Hermitage and thence Chieveley. But, on recrossing the M4, Chieveley is denied by a quick right to Worlds' End (hat tip to REM) prior to reaching Stanmore. It's verdant leafy lanes to Lilley before picking up the B4494 and the plunge off Chain Hill, dropping like basses in to Wantage approaching sunset. The led ride will END at the base of Chain Hill at approx 9pm. For those with energy, time, funds and a raging thirst, Tales of the Big Chainring can be recounted over a Foxy beer in Denchworth - probably best decided on the night. |

Commuter traffic in the lanes was still evident as the challenging Applepie Hill was dispatched in good style leading on to Hampstead Norreys and the feature section of the ride : a delicious linkage of subtly-dropping lanes alongside the Pang. Half distance saw the far turn Westwards made just prior to Bucklebury (tempting as the ford might have been). We climbed steadily through the manicured woodlands and rattled into Hermitage. My "little surprise" of a short piece of Byway didn't seem to cause too much consternation among the troops (sorry, I should have flagged that was coming). Recrossing the M4 and then the A34 signalled the final long steady climb to regain Chain Hill was beginning and caused some splintering under what was becoming a glorious evening. The (now head)wind all but dropped out and the skies cleared to illuminate the Vale beautifully. Just five minutes after the predicted 9pm finish, we ended the ride at the base of Chain. Near enough 60km with 730m of climbing at 25.4kph. Many thanks all, a cracking stress-free evening in great company. | ||
