Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Grove
Description:
Update 11 May: further details now posted on CTC Oxfordshire website. See URL below.

We are planning a long weekend away to Bourton-on-the-Water over the Jubilee Bank Holiday. There will be a ride out on Saturday 2nd June (3*), returning on Tuesday 5th June (3*), with a choice of rides on Sunday and Monday, one fairly short of 25 miles (2*), the other about 50 miles (3*). These rides will start in Bourton (provisionally) at 9.30am going in a NE or NW direction to explore the heart of the Cotswolds. As usual, there will be stops for coffee and lunch.

Some people will be camping while others prefer to B&B. As this is Jubilee Weekend, we expect Bourton to be particularly busy and would advise early booking.

Steve and Robin are planning to cycle out on Saturday to meet the group from Oxford for coffee at Yarnton Garden Centre , Steve leaving Grove at 9am. We'll then continue onto Bourton for a late lunch at the Mousetrap. It's about 22 miles to coffee and 46 miles to Bourton and then about 30 miles back via Burford, Brize and Bampton if you want to make a day ride of it.

Further details on the routes for Sunday and Monday in the individual ride entries below.

Riders are welcome to join us for the whole or part of the weekend. If you are interested in coming on one or more days please contact Steve or the individual ride leader. For further details including links for accommodation please see the CTC Oxfordshire website.

The route covers 80km of the nicest lanes in the New Forest, with a pub lunch stop along the way. There are a few short hills and a longer drag, but if you can climb Hackpen Hill, there will be nothing that troubles you!)

Ride definitely on - please contact Chris if you plan to join in but haven't already spoken to him. Weather forecast is fine but pretty windy.

Nine riders set out on time from Cadnam, heading south to Beaulieu, where we had a timely coffee stop. The two table were split in clinical fashion - the cake eaters and the envious. Dark clouds loomed and we felt a few spots of rain, but nothing serious.

Heading east into the headwind was quite arduous, as was the climb up the Bolderwood Ornamental Drive, but we made light work of it all and arrived at the Red Shoot Inn for a very nice lunch.

After lunch was more undulating, but everyone did really well, and it was awesome getting a wind-assist up Deadman's Hill before the descent into the appropriately named Nomansland and then wiggled through the fantastic flowering rhododendron display for a well-earned cuppa at the finish.

Everyone rode really well, and the consensus was that we should have more 2* all-day rides - ride leaders please take note!

Betjeman Bike Ride 1*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
The car park of the Lamb pub, Mill Street, Wantage
Description:
NB: please note that we will gather in the car park of the Lamb pub in Mill Street in order to begin the tour of the Park.

This is a special ride organised in collaboration with the Trustees of the Betjeman Park as part of the Wantage Summer Festival. We are inviting all those interested to start with a tour of the Park and then join us in a gentle 10 mile ride out to Uffington, where John Betjeman lived in the 1930's and 40's. St Mary's Church in Uffington will be providing tea and cakes and there will be the chance to visit Tom Brown's School Museum next door. This will be the end of the formal ride, but we will escort riders back to Wantage and Grove afterwards.

Well, given that I was seriously considering cancelling this ride two days before, given the apocalyptic weather forecast at that time, we did well! An excellent turn-out, with a nice combination of old and new riders. We had a very interesting tour of the Betjeman Park led by Ralph Cobham before setting off. The ride went according to plan and we had a very good tea and cake stop at St Mary's church in Uffington (built in 1250 and known as the Cathedral of the Vale). I wasn't sure how the younger riders would cope with the second half of the ride but they all did extremely well to power back to Grove where we all went our separate ways. A great effort by everyone!

Finally, some reasonable weather! All went to plan, a good group and a good pace. We seemed to romp up the big hill at an impressive pace and had a good burn-up on the way back through the Vale, interrupted only briefly by an impressively large flood on the road between Denchworth and Grove. As always in these situations, the key factor is - as long as the water level stays below bottom bracket level, all is well...

Thanks to everyone for a very enjoyable ride.

Tuesday Evening Easy Off-road Ride 1*
Leader:
Robin Tucker
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
A shorter and easier off-road ride around local tracks, suitable for off-road beginners and those wanting to give it a go. About 10 miles and not going all the way up to the Ridgeway, but still aiming to have some fun!

Should suit any form of mountain bike, or solidly built touring or cyclocross bikes - call me if you are not sure.
Riders:

Riders = 6
Report:
This was planned an easier ride for those wishing to try out the off-road experience. I was checking the weather forecast nervously as it approached. In the end there was no rain on the day, but a lot the day before. So there was plenty of mud and puddles for testing bike control skills and getting muddy!

6 of us set off: 3 off-road regulars, 1 usually on-road rider testing out the mud, and 2 newcomers to the club. We went along a squishy Crab Hill and then up Goddards Brook. I normally try to plan loops, but this one was more out-and-back as that let people pick how far they wanted to go towards the Ridgeway.

Based on different speed levels, we split and 4 went all the way up to the Ridgeway and down "Sheep Hill" (Middlehill Down on the map and no sheep today). The other 2 of us met up with them at them bottom of this big hill and we all rode back together.

I think everyone enjoyed it, everyone got muddy, and no one got damaged - although Steve had a bit of a nettle encounter near the end!

11 miles for everyone, but 4 people could add 2 miles to that.

Regular Wantage Ride 3*
Leader:
Glen Savegar
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
80-100km all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, riding pace 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

This months ride will head out to Streatley and Goring.

A few hills before lunch, but taken at a leisurely pace with plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings!

Out-From Wantage we will head up Chain Hill before turning left for Farnborough, West and East Ilsley, Compton, Aldworth, Goring and Streatley. The plan is to stop for lunch here, but if it's busy (It's Fathers Day!) we will seek out an alternative on the homeward route.

Return-From Goring we will pick up the Icknield Way to Wallingford, Little Wittenham, Long Wittenham, Appleford, Sutton Courtenay, Drayton, Steventon, NCN 44 to Wantage.

Approx- 51.5 miles (83 kms)

Report:
Unfortunately there was little opportunity for us to ease into our ride gently as we were immediately confronted with the sharp incline of Chain Hill from Wantage, but were rewarded for our efforts with the lovely views from the road heading east to the Ilsleys, where we were met by Ursula and David who had cycled over from Newbury to join us.

Having bags of time on our hands and not wanting to arrive at Goring too early, the byeway east of Compton seemed like an interesting diversion from our planned route. Well!..a promising enough beginning (and end!), but also a stretch of track midway more suited to a ramble than a cycle ride, so a little dismounting and pushing of bikes was required as I realised we had probably reached the point of no return. Still!..a pleasant diversion, but probably not a great decision for a road ride...and we even picked up a puncture for our troubles from a thorn!..Oops..Sorry Derek! Anyway enough of that!..We were soon back on course, and heading downhill to cross the Thames at Streatley for lunch at The John Barleycorn Inn. Nice baguettes sitting in the garden, and enjoying the welcome return of our dear old friend the sun :-)

Iknield way and quiet roads followed after lunch, where we said goodbye to Ursula and David at the crossroads west of Woodcote. Crossing the river once more at Wallingford, there followed a brief magical mystery tour of Brightwell Cum Sotwell, and a partially successful attempt to guess the correct exit from the village. A pleasant but uneventful return home skirting Wittenham Clumps, and onto Appleford, Sutton Courtenay, Drayton, and Steventon. No takers for tea at Q Gardens this time around, so we opted instead to cut the route ever so slightly short, and head home by way of Hanney Cow Road.

Thanks everyone for your company, and a big welcome back to Des. It was really nice to see you out on your bike again!

An excellent ride with a very tight group this evening. There was sunshine, it was warm and very little wind, almost perfect conditions. Unfortunately one of us suffered a major puncture just before Steventon and had to retire, hopefully you made it home safely?
The ride was taken at a very good pace, my bike computers claims we managed to average 16.6 mph, but we kept the group together and everyone helped out at the front.

Unfortunately my GPS batteries ran out as we entered Denchworth on the way home so I only have a partial record of the route.

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 2*
Leader:
David Smith
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:

Description:
At 65 km (40 miles), a little longer than the usual 2*, we are heading out to the cafe at Cotswold Woollen Weavers (http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/plaza/hk67/visitor.htm).

The ride will be taken at 2* pace.

We leave Grove via the ubiquitous Denchworth route, before heading towards Uffington & Fernhan. We then skirt Faringdon and head on towards Coleshill & Lechlade. The tea stop is in the village of Filkins at about 38 km in to the ride.

After much deserved refreshment we head back via Bampton, Buckland, Gainfield, Charney Basset & (yet again) Denchworth.

There is some climbing up to and beyond Faringdon, but that is familiar 2* territory and on the return is the long drag up towards Buckland, but that's about it.

Please note the ride may finish around 17:30 due to the greater distance so please take that into consideration if you need to be back in Grove by a particular time.

Report:
A really good ride with an excellent tea stop! It was quite windy on the way out to Uffington with one very heavy shower on the way. We made good progress along some very quiet roads to the tea stop at the Cotswold Wool Centre in Filkins, I’m told the cream teas were to die for! We raced the showers from Filkins to Bampton and had a dry and very pleasant ride back to Grove via Buckland.

Accompanied children and newcomers very welcome. These rides are designed to be a gentle and sociable introduction to group riding and to build rider confidence. Report:
A lovely relaxed ride tonight with a nice group. The rain held off - well, a slight drizzle on part of the ride but, if anything, acted as a coolant (!)
A gentle pace, stopping to enjoy the scenery where appropriate, and arriving at the all important pub stop in good time (ie first!) where all six of us stopped for a drink.

A good ride which was a pleasure to lead.
