9 riders (six of whom had registered) for a breezy but dry spin out in the Vale.
We picked up Matt, who had signed up for the 3 star ride up Chain Hill, but missed the 16.20 depart.
Roger T picked up sweeping duties. Good to welcome Paul for his first group ride of the season.

The headwind out was a bit testing, and I took the decision to chop off a corner of the route, taking the railway bridge rather than going down into Uffington.

After turning right at Fernham, however, the tail wind was quite delightful.

First I must apologise to Mathew A, who had signed up for the ride, and turned up in good time. However, I had made a mistake on my list of riders, thought I was only expecting myself and 4 others, so when had that number headed off early. Sorry Mathew and very pleased to hear you were able to join the 2* ride.

Whilst cool and overcast compared to recent days, this was probaly to our benefit, as it meant it wasn't too hot for our hilly option.
Typically we each took the climbs at our own pace and regrouped at the top, however if we had been awarding King of the Mountain points, they would definately have gone to James, who is in great from ready for his charity London to Paris ride next month.
The highlight of the ride for me was as towards the end of the ride, as we rejoined the Wantage road, a barn owl decided to join us, flying alongside us for about half a mile, aving no problems keeping up with our pace!

Well, we got pretty wet on the way home from Stanford Coffee House, but on the way there we managed to dodge the showers, sheltering for a few minutes in the bus shelter at Charney Bassett. Stopping to admire the poppies by the bridleway to Pusey, we noticed white webs crawling with caterpillars munching the hawthorn hedge. More poppies at Gainfield - a stunning sight! And to think I nearly cancelled the ride because of the poor weather forecast! A grand morning out, with great company.

A very easy and lovely group to lead - no mechanical problems (just as well as half the ride was in a torrential downpour). We set off in a very light drizzle which soon stopped so quite a nice ride to coffee in Faringdon apart from a fairly strong headwind. We were well looked after in the coffee shop with the owners cooking us some samosas in a very quick time and the coffee is always excellent. The return journey was uneventful other than the heavens opening and people asking why my waterproof jacket was shedding the water so well.

Nice ride, nice company and particularly good to see Lily back riding with us. Thank you, one and all.

Getting close to the longest day - so planning an early (7.15am) start to cycle out for a late breakfast / early brunch. Joy recently led a ride to The Pantry in Yattendon and having seen the breakfasts being served, I thought another visit was a must. I have, however, changed the route for variety. Aim is to get to The Pantry shortly after it opens at 9am. A second stop will then be at the Cantorist in Childrey where we can (hopefully) enjoy a drink in the sunshine and feel smug that we will have cycled over 70k before lunch!

Beautiful morning (warm and sunny even at 7.15am).
Quite a few familiar roads + some new ones. Also roads done in a different direction / order to normal. The only common theme was climbing, with one particular hill - Pyke's Hill near Ashampstead -that I am not keen to repeat. (According to Garmin it was 18% in places).
However our efforts were rewarded by a lovely brunch at The Pantry. The aim had been to get there for opening at 9 - and we would have achieved that if it wasn't for an unfortunate puncture on Barry's bike which he fixed quickly. We were however there by 9.08 which was fortunate because shortly after that it was full with a long queue.
Thanks to Barry and Lisa for your company and good humour when we were faced with yet another hill!!

Steve Swanton later had a text to confirm he made it safely.
We stopped at Bloomfields in Shrivenham for coffees and extra water. But note the tap in the loo is at such an angle its very difficult to fill a bottle and that is the only source offerred.
as we headed back towards Wantage a few peeled off to head for home.
I don't have any ride stats as my Garmin navigated very well but didn't record the ride (GRRRRR!).

1* Saturday Half Day Ride Special! 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Amazingly, this ride is the 10,000th posting recorded on our website (club ride, event, blog, etc) since 1999! It also marks a notable anniversary! Something special is required to mark both this extraordinary and quirky milestone and a landmark event in our club history.

On 21st June 2000, during the Millennium Festival of Cycling and as part of Sustrans's Longest Ride Event to celebrate the opening of the National Cycle Network, we pioneered the route from Wantage to Didcot via Harwell, which later became NCN544. So what better way to mark the 25th Anniversary of this ride than to follow its current counterpart in and out of Harwell, the Icknield Greenway, with a refreshment stop at DiSH. And on the way we'll stop to explore local Millennium stones in Grove and in Ardington too. It's a round trip of 16 miles or so with about half of the route on cyclepaths and easy tracks.

It is forecast to be HOT so please bring plenty to drink. One advantage of the route is that significant stretches are in shade!

Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting). Please let me know if you are planning to come.

We had a good turn out for the pub ride. We had 2 new riders from Grove join us, welcome to Jamille and Juliano, we hope to see you both out again.
The weather was warm but quite windy in places, where we had to battle against some gusty blasts. We went out to Denchworth and then over to Charney, after Charney we went to Gainfield and Stanford. We came back via Park Lane ( where my husband John found us) and back to Denchworth. John and myself and Jamille and Juliano stayed at the pub for a meal and the rest went back to Grove together.
Good to see you all out there. :)

What a glorious evening to be out on the bike. Four riders left Grove to pick up Anke in Letcombe. The route took us up Holborn and Hackpen Hills which everyone completed with not much difficulty. The view from the top was incredible with the Vale bathed in sunshine. The descent down towards Lambourn was made harder by a nagging headwind and quite a poor road surface. But the ride from Seven Barrows to Blowingstone Hill was very enjoyable. The descent was as frightening as ever, but everyone coped well and we were soon back at the Fox.

A very enjoyable ride with excellent company. No problems at all.

A pleasant but windy evening ride. Hard work staying together on the way out as the wind caught us.After the climb past Faringdon Folly it was a tail wind for most or the rest of the way which made for rapid progress, especially the stretch of the A417 to the Hatford turn. Group split up at Denchworth with just under half stopping at the fox.
