Leader:Roger Postbeschild |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres required and good lights when it gets dark (‘get you home’ lights in Spring/Autumn). We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let us know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. But please let us know if you are coming so we can tell you if we decide to cancel due to bad weather or other reasons.A modest 19km ride to open the season - should be negotiable, with care, on a gravel bike. Start is Wantage Market Place but the actual route starts at The Lord Nelson, happy to collect people there! LIGHTS WILL BE REQUIRED. |
||
Report:It was good to meet new member Amy and also to see Tim, for the first time in a while.In order to match the ride to the riders, the original route was modified, climbing to the Ridgeway, heading eastwards into a very chilly wind (my GPS unit recorded 4 degrees) and back via Betterton. Satisfied customers! | ||

Leader:Lorna Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:Please book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Easy sociable ride of 24-32 km (15-20 miles) at a pace of 14-17km/h (9-11 mph).A gentle ride up to the KBS cafe at Southmoor Village Hall, via Denchworth and West Hanney; returning via Charney Bassett. |
||
Report:Southmoor held a couple of surprises for us: KBS cafe at the village hall wasn't running (a note on the door said the organisers were at a funeral) and quite a long section of the main road was blocked by major works. Fortunately Munch was reliably good for refreshments and we were able to dismount and walk along the pavement past all the the works.Otherwise the ride went to plan: a gentle potter with plenty of pauses, enjoying the spring weather and good conversations as we went. Thank you, everyone, for your company. | ||

Riders:Angie FisherAnke Otto Chris Marchant Clare Hazell David Jackson Des Higgs Julie Haynes Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Riders = 9 Weather:![]() Report:What a glorious evening for a cycle ride! Thanks to warnings from Clare and Des, a minor change was made to the route to avoid the 3-way traffic lights and burst water main at the corner of Brereton and Newlands Drives (at least on the outward leg). And so we set off on the pristine tarmac of Main Street before the potholes of Cane Lane to pick up the road into Wantage.With a relatively short time to ride before sunset, we made steady progress before the hills and only stopped to regroup and catch our breathe at the top of Holborn. We then enjoyed the long descents through Childrey and down to the A417. After negotiating the main road in 3s to Goosey, we could relax again in the lanes. From there back to Grove, the hedges were just glorious with blackthorn blossom glistening in the low evening sun. We were back in Grove just as the sun was setting behind us. Great fun! | ||

Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. An all day ride, riding pace of 11-14mph. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.This is a change to the originally planned route as the Harlequin Hack is on the same day. This is a popular and enjoyable 110km ride and entry must be booked in advance. It is likely to sell out, so booking early is advised. Details and entry are here: https://www.audax.uk/event-details/calendar/13256-the_harlequin_hack If you’ve not done an audax before, see here: https://www.audax.uk/about-audax/new-to-audax/ Please make sure you arrive in plenty of time to book in as it will start promptly at 9.30. Please let me know if you’re coming. |
||
Report:We were lucky to have dry and sunny weather for the beginning and the end of the ride, with light rain in the middle. As always, the Harlequin Hack was well organised and a great route to follow. There was a long wait at Cogges to both place the orders and then collect our drinks, which led to us running a bit later than expected for the rest of the day. We stopped at Chadlington for lunch, which was very welcome, before enjoying the views as we cycled back towards home. The last few miles were quite tough as there was a strong headwind but we did make it with time to spare.Thanks to everyone for being a great group to cycle with on an enjoyable day out. | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:For our first Evening 1* ride of the season, a gentle ride to the green at Goosey and back via Denchworth, a distance of around 8.5 miles. It can get cold in the lanes on April evenings, so please wrap up; gloves recommended.Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles (16-24km) at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph (13-16kph), following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:A low-keys start to the new season of Tuesday Evening 1* rides with 4 riders cycling out to Goosey. We set out under grey skies on freshly damp roads but the weather brightened as we rode and the sun broke through on several occasions to cast a warmer glow over the hedgerows and Goosey green. We stopped by the far corner of the green next to a pond with fine bullrushes and enjoyed the bird song and some animal spotting (including a muntjac deer and some black rabbits). There were just a few spots of rain as we headed back, but nothing more. Back in Grove, we stopped by Sycamore walk to admire the patch of daffodils and cherry trees on the green, before heading our separate ways. Thanks all for a mellow ride. | ||

Light winds after yesterday's gales were most welcome.Fuelled by generous cakes (and cheese scone) from Aston Pottery, it was a great pleasure to be able to ride down Great Brook - the waters were well receded. Buckland Hill was dispatched in good order by all. I do try to keep the average speed appropriate to the riders in the group. Climbing likely.A chance to explore the Swindon to Marlborough cycle path, including the M4 crossing at the helter skelter bridge. The path itself is best suited for wider tyres and not skinny road ones. Once in Marlborough we will find a cafe for an early lunch before returning via Ramsbury and Aldbourne and dropping down into the Vale at Shrivenham, where we can hopefully get a coffee and hot cross bun at the farm shop. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey Eddie Little James Bosley Jan McCabe Jo Little Katherine Boyce Louise Bowers Roger Postbeschild Riders = 9 Weather:![]() ![]() Report:Lovely days riding: enough hills to feel you've done some work but not so many your legs are moaning constantly! Heavier traffic on the Springline Road than expected for 9am on a Bank Holiday Friday but a lot of driver patience and judicious splitting of the group into 3's helped.Not all the group had done the curly wurly bridge before, which is always fun and the NCN45 up to Chilsledon was not as stony and steep as I remembered! First time on the cycle path from Chisledon to Marlborough but it was glorious if rather narrower and gravelly than expected in places. A mechanical delayed our getting to Marlborough but the swift and efficient service in the Gallery cafe more than made up for that. A first time route from Ramsbury was a good one to remember for future use. Fox Hill was soon reached and the down hill to Shrivenham great. The cakes at Hinton Farm Shop were much enjoyed before the final stretch back. It was good to have assistance at times with the headwind. All-in-all a splendid group for a great day out on the bikes. | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:Our Annual Spring Ride aimed at those who haven't been cycling much over the winter and want to dust off their bike and get the pedals turning again. Newcomers will be very welcome and it's an opportunity for club members to bring family and friends. Please note that children are very welcome but need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.This will be a gentle ride around the quiet lanes of the Vale of White Horse visiting the villages of Denchworth, Lyford, Southmoor and Charney Bassett.There's a steady but gentle climb up to Southmoor but then a nice long gentle descent back to Chanrney Bassett. We'll stop regularly to catch our breath and take in the views and we'll a stop by the shop in Southmoor for refreshments (or ice creams or Easter eggs) about half- way round. The full route will be about 16 miles but there are several short-cut options for those who would prefer a shorter ride. Please bring a drink to slake your thirst. To help gauge number, please let the ride leader know if you are planning to come or have any queries about the ride. |
||
Report:Not a usual Back-on-your Bike Ride! With many away for Easter or otherwise engaged, and a uncertain weather forecast in the days before, there were just 3 of us. But it was good to see Nick, out on his first bike ride of 2025, thus fulfilling the brief. As it turned out, the forecast showers came to naught, and we enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon albeit with a nagging north-easterly wind.We followed the route as planned, stopping by the church in Lyford on our way to Southmoor. There, my first suggestion for a diversion was agreed, and we continued over the bridge to Longworth to stop at the Blue Boar. It was lovely sitting out in the sunshine in the pub garden for a drink and a natter. Having got to Longworth, we were too close not to take the scenic bridleway to Hinton Waldrist, lingering by the church and manor on the way. Then it was back down to the A420 on Lamb Lane (one of my favourite hidden routes) and new to Anke), before the dash with care across the main road and through the hedge into the Lamb & Flag road. I couldn’t resist a further diversion: along the metalled lane to Goosey Wick Farm, as far as the point where the footpath to Charney Bassett bears away from the drive, and back again; opening up different views from the middle of nowhere… The final stretch past Asti Equestrian and back into Grove found us into the headwind again, but nearly there. We were all happy to continue back to Old Mill Hall to “complete” the ride. An enjoyable afternoon and thanks to Nick and Anke for your good company. | ||

Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.73km (45miles) to Abingdon for lunch/coffee going via the Letcombes and Boars Hill, so it isn't too flat. It is Easter Sunday, but Proof Social cafe (@43km) is open and there are offer options in Abindgon if Proof too busy |

Riders:Andy PixtonClare Hazell James Bosley Jan McCabe Jo Little Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Louise Bowers Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 10 Weather:![]() Report:We were lucky with the weather, as whilst a little cool most of the time we had blue sky and sun.The ride to lunch was mainly flat, except for undulating through the Letcombes and a climb of Boar's Hill. I had picked the route up Boar's Hill simply by looking at the map, turns out this wasn't the way up we normally take..... concensus seemed to be the normal route was probably better...... the hill I took them up wasn't as tough as people feared, but the road was steep and very narrow, whilst we only met a couple of cars, the road was a bit narrow for cars and slow bikes, so the normal option probably better. As we descended, we had glorious views over to Oxford, and then not far to our lunch stop at Proof Social, by which point we had done well over half the distance and all the climbing. Proof Social was busy, but the queue moved quite quickly and the pastries and coffee excellent, so worth waiting for. Being such a popular venue, meant there were no seats left inside or out, but no one seemed to mind sitting on the ground outside! We decided the cycle path from Proof into Abingdon might be very busy with people out for strolls with kids and dogs on a sunny Easter Sunday, so we stuck to the roads as per plan (I would certainly recommend the cycle path, but maybe not with a large group). From Abingdon we took the excellent Peep-O-Day lane cycle path, a new option for some of the group, then the road into Drayton and home via Steventon, Hanneys and Denchworth. Thanks to all for great company | ||

It was another lovely evening for a ride, though the headwind as we went up and down Hackpen was very annoying. The first time I've had to pedal going downhill for quite a while! It did mean we had a great ride as we went along Sevenbarrows and we returned to Grove in good time. The earlier start was definitely worth it. Six of us started from Old Mill Hall, picking up 3 more riders (by arrangement) along the wiggly route through Stockham and Naldertown. In Letcombe Bassett we encountered a very nervous horse and had to pull in while his two handlers coaxed him past. He'd been spooked by a cyclist going past at speed the day before, they said. We were much kinder!Everyone succeeded in pedalling up Holborn Hill, even the people who’d said they were out of practice, and we enjoyed views over the downs before dropping down to Childrey for coffee. Who should join us there but John S, who’d managed to source a new brake cable, fit it AND catch up – most impressive! Susan had to get back and left the ride after coffee, leaving nine of us to descend to Goosey. At Denchworth we said goodbye to Sarah and Tim, then returned to Grove. What a pleasure to be out in the fresh air, with spring blossom all round! Thanks everyone, for your company. | ||

We then passed the Faringdon Academy and took the Highworth road to Badbury Clumps, and as we approached the sun peeped through. 3* New Forest Weekend | 3* |
---|
Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Lyndhurst |
Description:This is day 1 of a two day visit to the New Forest. We are making it a weekend away and are staying in Lyndhurst from Friday to Sunday. We usually all meet up Friday evening for a meal at La Pergola, which is close to the ride starting point. It would be possible, however, to travel down early on Saturday and just treat it as a day ride.This year's New Forest ride has a new route, heading us into unfamilar territory to the north and west of the forest. As always we're keeping to quieter roads where possible and should see a good range of scenery, including both forest and heathland. We head to the north of Lyndhurst before dropping down near Fordingbridge. Here we do a quick extra loop to get to the first cafe stop at The Potting Shed at Hyde (27 miles) before rejoining the main route. We then skirt the edge of Ringwood before heading to The Old Farmhouse at Burley (50 miles), after which we take a familiar route back to Lyndhurst, including the ascent of Bolderwood Drive. 62 miles (100km) and just under 1000m of climbing. There is more climbing than in previous years, but is spread out throughout the day. The starting place for both days is the Bolton's Bench car park on the B3056 Lyndhurst to Beaulieu road. When approaching from Lyndhurst village (on the A35 Southampton Road) the B3056 is on the right hand side, opposite the fire station. The car park is immediately on the left. It has a large car park. Lyndhurst has several small hotels, including the Ormonde House Hotel and The Penny Farthing. There are also some B&B's. We have booked The Ormonde House Hotel for when we stay, and can highly recommend it as they are very friendly and helpful, but the area is popular so it would be best to book quickly. I am limiting both days to 12 riders, as any more is too much on these roads and we will split into 2 groups for ease of riding. Please contact me if you would like to put your name down. I have set up a Whatsapp group to help co-ordinate everything . I have contact details for nearly everyone but please could you ensure you have downloaded Whatsapp onto your phone. The ride is already fully booked. If anyone wants to be on a waiting list then please let me know. |

The new route was very popular with all the riders, providing us with quiet roads, fantastic scenery and two good cafe stops. The second was a regular choice of the Farmhouse Bakery at Burley.Later on we all met up at La Pergola in Lyndhurst for dinner. Rhinefield ornamental drive was as beautiful as ever, and we then had a good variety of scenery throughout the ride. The roads were busier than the day before - not sure if it was because it was sunnier or more touristy than the northern part of the forest. Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:No need to book formally, but please text or email the ride leader so they know you're coming. Off-road gentle ride around local tracks, 15-20 miles probably visiting Harwell.Knobbly tyres required, it's mostly good, but puddles in places. We are keen to welcome new riders of all abilities. |
||
Report:Four of us started from WMP, and fortunately, Pip, arriving a bit late, found us on Ormond ROad just before we turned off for the first hill (Springfield Road).Having promised a gentle ride, and the temperature rising, we ambled past Knights Farm and up Goddards Brook, climbing in two stages to The Ridgeway. There we headed east to Scutchamer's Knob and descended to the corner of Harwell Campus. Two at speed, three more gently, all smiling! The next section was defined by twisting trails through the woods. Our e-bike rider, having been laughing up the hills, was less keen on the tight turns, but no-one had any problems, and lots of fun was had until we popped out on NCN544 just Northwest of Harwell Campus. The riders agreed to add on a little extra loop via Rowstock, some extra twisty-trails-in-woods, and then we picked up the Icknield Greenway to return to Wantage via Ardington. | ||
