Oxford Special May Day ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:5:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This year May Day falls on a Thursday, but this doesn't stop the ancient Oxford tradition of the choir singing at sunrise from the tower of Magdalen College. So I am repeating our now traditional slightly bonkers May Day sunrise ride to Oxford and back, hoping that some may still be able to join a midweek version. The bad news is - it starts at 5.30. The good news is this means we can catch the wonderful early morning light on the river and the ancient buildings of Oxford, as well as hopefully getting at least some sense of the occasion. I can't guarantee that we will be able to get anywhere near the Magdalen tower - I suspect the whole city will be going crazy - but it should be an adventure!We head out to Fyfield, under the Tubney tunnel and across to Sunningwell before joining the river by Kennington for a lovely route into town past the College boathouses with views across Christ Church Meadow. Then we will take a look at some of the best buildings Oxford has to offer (including my own St Cross College) before heading out of town along the Oxford Canal to Wolvercote for a big loop around Port Meadow. This year I am planning a cafe stop in Botley for those who don't have to rush back. Finally we conquer Cumnor Hill and head for home. It is just over 40 miles and my plan is to be back in Grove by around 10. Costa in Grove will be open for post-ride refreshments and facilities. Please let me know in advance if you are joining the ride. |

Riders:Barry StantonJan McCabe John Tranter Katherine Boyce Lorna Swanton Sharon Bedford Simon Wysocki-Jones Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:![]() ![]() Report:I am always amazing (and impressed) by how many people respond so positively to the ridiculous invitation to start a bike ride at 05.30, but it was great to see everyone. Actually, this might have been the best sunrise experience yet as the orange glow illuminated the mist rising from the fields. Totally glorious.We had a nice quiet run across to Oxford on largely deserted roads and enjoyed the paths down to the river at Iffley. Simon was our expert commentator on the rowing activity that we passed, and then we were into the fun and mayhem of the city. It was good to see St Aldates church handing out free bacon rolls and coffee to those a bit the worse for wear from a long night of drinking, plus we saw morris men, green men and assorted eccentrics galore. After a brief VIP comfort stop at St Cross College we enjoyed the towpath along the Oxford Canal up to Wolvercote and circumnavigated Port Meadow. A great coffee stop at the Missing Bean in Botley fuelled us up for the final stretch home on familiar roads. | ||

3* Saturday Hilly Half Day Ride to Yattendon | 3* |
---|
Leader:Joy Arthur |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:The Beacon |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).Lots of climbing on this 1/2 day ride but the rewards are delicious cakes at The Pantry, some quiet country roads after coffee and its not even 60km. |
||
Report:After a slightly chilly start it warmed up to be a glorious sunny morning, a perfect day for a ride.The Pantry was an excellent coffee stop in Yattendon with a great array of cakes. We rather enviously watched some eggs Benedict being served to other customers and resolved a return for brunch should be made. When planning this ride I had concentrated so much on all the climbing I had forgotten how many lovely long descents there were so they were a bonus and overall we seemed to make light work of the hills. A challenging but very enjoyable ride with a lovely group, thanks everyone! | ||

2* Wallingford Special | 2* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:It's a while since we've been to Wallingford on a 2* outing, so no better excuse than an otherwise free day in the ride calendar on a a Bank Holiday Sunday!We'll take a wiggly route across the vale to Wallingford making use of quiet roads and familiar cycle tracks as far as Harwell campus, then the metalled railway path to the edge of Didcot and on through the pretty villages of East Hagboume, Aston Tirrold and South Moreton. Refreshment stop in Wallingford (probably at the Boathouse by the river Thames). We'll leave Wallingford following NCN5 out to the Wittenhams then on through Appleford, cross the Thames at Culham and continue into Abingdon. There will be the option of a second refreshment stop at Annie's at the Boathouse, as we loop through the town passing along the river to Peep-O'Day Lane (NCN5). We'll then use the delightful old cobbled causeway path along Ginge Brook from Milton to Steventon, cross Cow Common to the Hanneys and return to Grove on the Farm track from West Hanney. A round trip of about 44 miles with about 10 miles of non-technical off-road tracks and cycle paths half-of which are metalled. The route is relatively flat and we'll take it at a relaxed 2* pace of 11-13mph (18-20km/h ). Please let me know by text if you are intending to come. |

3* Bank Holiday Special | 3* |

Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Cumnor Hill |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. All-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.Bank Holiday Special starting from Cumnor Hill (exact location to be shared nearer the time). Partly a repeat of the 2024 ride - but instead of going to Chipping Norton we will be exploring a Cotswold loop from Charlbury to Leafield. Just as a heads-up, this isn't a route I have used before - but I have tried to stay on minor roads and it should be an adventure! Two stops, the first at the frequently visited Cafe de la Post in Chadlington and the second at the Ue Steamhouse in Witney, (don't be put off because it is on an industrial estate I've stopped there before and was impressed). |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey James Bosley Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Lisa Footner Sharon Bedford Riders = 7 Report:Unfortunately the perfect spring weather we have been experiencing decided to take a break today and we set off in quite cold temperatures, (the ride leader had failed to notice the change and only brought fingerless gloves and lost feeling in her hands!). Luckily it warmed up a bit (or the subsequent uphills made a difference) and we had a lovely ride into the Cotswolds. As advertised I had plotted some new roads and (luckily) the new route proved successful with some great views, (oh and yes some more climbing). We managed to avoid the madness around Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm Shops so the traffic was mostly light.Two great cafe stops. The Headwind for the last 12k was brutal - and we were all pleased to get back to Cumnor. Thanks to Katherine and Joy who helped with the headwind at various points. | ||

Tuesday Evening 1* Ride | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:6May- Late change of ride leader due to illness. Please let Steve S rather than Steve B know if you are planning to come.The Challows and Childrey. We'll head out through Denchworth, stopping to admire the panoramic views fom the Circourt Rd railway bridge. After a short stretch of the A417, we'll turn into West Challow then climb gently on a metalled bridleway to Childrey. We'll continue to East Challow on the resurfaced bridleway and return to Grove along the canal towpath (10 miles). Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles (16-24km) at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph (13-16kph), following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:Another sunny evening albeit rather cooler than last week. A select group for this week's 1* outing but nonetheless an enjoyable ride with a smaller group allowing some impromptu off-road exploration towards the end.Circourt Road from Denchworth to the A417 is in the process of being re-chipped but was open and we were all happy to continue despite the loose chippings. We stopped to admire the view from the top of the Circourt railway bridge before continuing on to the A417. The main road was relatively quiet and we were soon turning off into West Challow. As we ascended the bridleway to Childrey, we could see a group of walkers ahead. This turned out to be the 1st King Alfred's Cub Scouts on an evening ramble. There were too many of them to pass, so we asked them to continue ahead and just followed slowly behind (good test of our balance control) before we could turn off towards Cantorist Farm at the top. We made our way to the church (new to Michael) and gave ourselves a rest by the viewpoint while enjoying a natter. By the time we continued, the path to East Challow was clear... Both Michael and John were up for a little exploration, so rather than returning along the canal as planned, we turned into Woodhill Lane and continued as far as the old airfield perimeter path. After a short stretch of baked mud, we joined the concrete path, which passes below the line of mature trees at the top of a low rise that now mark the end of the former runway. We regained more familiar ground by the canal junction with the track past Crown and returned to Grove via Downsview Road. Good fun! | ||

Daytime 1* Thursday Ride | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Old Mill Hall |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Easy sociable ride of 24-32 km (15-20 miles) at a pace of 14-17km/h (9-11 mph).A loop around Wantage with refreshments at the Vale and Downland Museum. We'll head out through Denchworth, stopping to admire the panoramic views of the Downs from the Circourt Rd railway bridge. After a short stretch of the A417, we'll turn into West Challow then climb gently on a metalled bridleway to Childrey. After a pause byChildrey church, we'll continue to East Challow on the resurfaced bridleway with its fine views of the vale and then enjoy the descent into Wantage on the Portway. After refreshments, we'll head out of Wantage by a wiggly back route to join the NCN5 track out to Lockinge. We'll cut through the Lockinge Estate for another nice descent to Ardington. Finally we'll climb up to the A417 cross-roads and descent (again!) past Lains Barn and back to Grove. A round trip of 16.5 miles. |
||
Report:With John's kind agreement, the first half of the ride was a repeat of our route from Tuesday evening. But as it makes use of roads and tracks/bridleways that are (usually) less-travelled and there are fine views to enjoy on the way (as well as donkeys, lambs and alpacas!) it was worth doing again.At Childrey, we found that the church was open, enabling a quick look around before we continued on to East Challow. We then enjoyed the descent of the Portway before stopping at the museum for refreshments. The bacon toasties are recommended. Both John and Susie left us at this point to head home before other activities. The remaining 3 of us continued as planned (with an interesting detour around the newish estate on the site of the former Icknield school/KA East Site, where Tim went as a youth). We then continued on NCN544 to Lockinge. With the sun making a welcome appearance, it was finally time to shed a few layers! After descending to Ardington, we decided to take the easier route home via Kingsgrove. Tim left us there while Lorna and I returned to Grove via the King Alfred's Way cycletrack. An enjoyable morning's outing; thanks all for your company. | ||

Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. This is a route that starts and finishes on familiar routes but after coffee at Fairford takes in unfamiliar areas. We will go north east to traverse a trio of Amney's before picking up the White Way. Lunch will be in Northleach, with the final third of the ride being reasonably flat (unlike the morning!). Please let me know before Friday lunchtime if you are coming so I can finalise lunch arrangements. Parking is Pay and Display and according to the website, 6 hours is £6 which can be paid with cash or cards. |
||
Report:Splendid days cycling. The first part to Fairford was on many familiar roads and we swiftly arrive at 7a Coffee Shop which not only had a lovely garden but also very tasty coffee, cakes and vegan sausage rolls!The roads to lunch were mainly unknown but all agreed lovely. We knew the stretch before lunch would be hilly and boy were we right! Thanks were given to very patient, encouraging motorists who stopped and turned there engines off to allow us to inch our way past them on some interesting parts of the steepest hill and to the driver who stopped at the bottom of the next hill to allow ascending to be accomplished without pressure. The Prison Cafe at Northleach had very good food but overwhelmed staff due to the numbers that had descended on them. We enjoyed sitting in the sun whilst waiting for our food. After lunch the hills gave way to lighter descents and an interesting intermittent headwind. A final climb up from the Thames to Faringdon, the navigating of the one way system and we were done. Fortunately we had locals with us to help find The Barns Cafe. The doughnuts were up to their usual high standard and enjoyed by many. We split into two roughly equal groups and seemed not to be holding up traffic to any greatr degree.The weather gods weren't as kind to us as I had hoped as the forecast 18 degrees never materialised and there was a strong wind which challenged us on the way out but helped us significantly on the return leg. 1* Saturday Half-Day Ride - Awayday from Standlake | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Standlake Village Hall car park, OX29 7SB |
Description:Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting). Please let the ride leader know if you are planning to come.For a change of scenery, a repeat of a successful awayday ride to Witney starting from Standlake (11 miles from Grove), which I first ran in May 2022. We'll start from the large car park outside the village hall. We'll ride out on narrow lanes through Northmoor and Bablock Hythe to Stanton Harcourt. We'll then pick up the delightful winding lane through the old gravel pits, passing Rushy Common Nature reserve, to enter Cogges the back way. A series of cycle paths will bring us to Cogges Manor Farm Museum. After a tea stop at the museum cafe, we'll continue through the centre of Witney under the A40 to Witney Lakes. After an easy grit track we'll turn onto a concrete path to Ducklington and after winding through the village will pick up the minor road to Aston and Cote. We'll pass the isolated St, Marys chapel at Old Shifford and return to Standlake via an easy track to avoid the A415. A round trip of about 19 miles, this is a relatively flat ride with only a few undulations, one gentle climb and one nice descent. I plan to cycle over to the start from Grove to make a longer ride - please let me know if you would like to join me. |

Riders:Carin TranterDes Higgs Diana Whidborne John Tranter Judith Agnew Michael Tayler Nick Portsmouth Patrick O'Leary Phil Jeffery Steve Swanton Tim Hoyle Riders = 11 Weather:![]() Report:A lovely clear sunny afternoon for a ride although a nagging north-easterly breeze meant that it never felt hot. Good to see Judith and Phil back out on a ride with us on their tandem.Although we were on backroads for most of the ride, we split into 2 groups of 5 bikes to help cars pass. A wise move, as the single-track roads through Northmoor, and later from Stanton Harcourt to Cogges,were surprisingly busy and, together with the poor conditions of the road surfaces, meant that we were regularly pulling over to let vehicles pass. My thanks to John for leading the second group and Michael and Nick for sweeping the first and second groups respectively. Nevertheless, all went smoothly. At Bablock Hythe we turned down to the Ferryman Inn to stop by the river and the site of the former "on-demand" chain ferry across to Eaton (which used a provide a great link across the river away from the traffic on the A415). We continued on to Stanton Harcourt and then on to the winding lane to Cogges. This is still signposted as part of the long-defunct Oxfordshire Cycleway - this was part of one of the linking routes between Oxford, Witney and the main round-the-county-boundary route. We had a good refreshment stop at Cogges Manor Farm, sitting in the sunshine - the large slabs of lemon drizzle cake were excellent! On resumption, we carefully negotiated the Cogges shared-use path to cross the Windrush into Witney town centre. The cycle route peters out at the top where it meets Witan Way, making for an awkward rejoining of the road at a roundabout. However, once through, we were soon turning by the Buttercross onto the road beside the town green. Witney was buzzing with a fete on the green and the town fair in full swing beyond on the Leys. We rejoined a shared use path at the bottom of the Leys to recross Witan Way and drop down to the cyclepath under the A40. We emerged into the relative tranquility of Witney Lakes. We continued along the lakeside path and then crossed a bridge to pick up the concrete SSE road into Ducklington. Through the village, we crossed the A415 and climbed up onto the Aston ‘roller-coaster’. After an initial climb, this road is great fun, with a series of descents and gentle ups that steadily drop down into the Thames valley. Despite modest elevation, this road gives marvellous views south across the Thames valley to the North Wessex Downs. At the bottom we turned off to Cote and continued through the fields to Old Shifford. We briefly joined the B4449, before turning off onto the track past the water-sports centre. Despite being a bridleway there is an ugly "Danger keep out" sign at the entrance - duly ignored! A final mile through pretty Standlake and we were back at the village hall just before 5pm. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon out. My thanks to everyone for your good company and particularly to Tim for accompanying me both on the ride over and then back as far as West Hanney. | ||

On the Icknield Greenway, regrouping after the climb up from the Bridge of Doom, we discovered it had lived up to its name and Mila had a puncture. Old-school repairs were required, as she didn't have a spare inner tube, but Steve took charge and all was completed efficiently. There was time for a good chat and to listen to skylarks above. We all resolved to check our puncture repair kits etc when we got home...Coffee etc at the Lightbox was excellent; Harwell Campus green and pleasant, with new areas of planting. We'd planned to return via the Ginge farm track but found the way barred by a gate (and the route 544 sign removed), so backtracked to the Icknield Greenway, then up to Ginge on the road. A lovely descent through Lockinge, admiring the views and an adorable foal, then up to the magnificent cycle path by King Alfred Way back to Grove. No one went all the way back to the start; people peeled off where most convenient for them to get home. A lovely morning; great company and team-work. Thanks everyone! | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A 60-mile all-day 2* ride to Marlborough as a further step up towards the century ride at the end of June (or for those who just fancy a longer ride at a 2* pace). I've now updated the route.We'll cross the Downs to Lambourn and descend the Lambourn valley to East Garston where we will have a relatively early refreshment stop at Priscilla's Kitchen. We'll continue to Welford, cross over into the Kennett valley via Wickham then take some winding small lanes through to Chilton Foliat, passing the charming estate village of Leverton en route. We'll continue through Ramsbury to Marlborough for lunch at Eliane's. After lunch, we'll recross the Downs the easy way, along the Ogbourne valley using the Marlborough to Chiseldon railway path (NCN422), a good grit track, then ride along the foot of the Downs to Woolstone and back through the vale. Potential tea stop in Ashbury if we need it on the way home. Round trip of 61 miles (99km) with about 2600 feet (790m) of climbing taken at a steady 2* pace. Please let me know if you are planning to come. All day ride (80+ km / 50+ miles), with a lunch stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). |
||
Report:A long but rewarding day in the saddle through glorious scenery and following some lovely lanes less-travelled south of the Downs. Tough at times due to the westerly headwind but a great tailwind home across the Vale. The ride distance is formally recorded as 99.46km but we had all covered 100km by the time we'd reached home. Once refreshed we’ll follow the Wilts and Berks Canal back through West / East Challow and Stockham. Expect to be back in Wantage for 01:00pm. Ride Distance 21.03 miles/33km. This route is suitable for gravel bikes. |
||
Report:Just the two of us for this Sunday off road ride. The trails were still super dry though we did experience a tough head wind for most of the way along the Ridgeway. Plenty of walkers and cyclists on gravel bikes too. One of my favourite sections along the Ridgeway is the section between Letcombe Bassett and Sparsholt Firs, the views didn’t disappoint. Wildlife spotted included Brown Hare, Kestrel, Muntjac and a Jay. Elevenses was taken at Cantorist where we both enjoyed some fine coffee, fresh cream raspberry doughnut’s and freshly baked quiche lorraine’s.We returned to Wantage via the Wilts and Berks Canal where the first section from West Challow was quite over grown, East Challow to Stockham was much better. Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Riding pace of 11-14mph. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.A trip to Hungerford - taking a slightly longer route using some of my favourite roads. Lack of cafes open on BHM means we have been forced into just one stop (Hungerford) at 45km. Total ride is 83k so slightly shorter second half. Do bring a snack if you feel 45k is a little too far - and we will stop somewhere for 10 minutes for a short rest. As ever when heading south, a hilly ride - but hopefully the views will make it worthwhile. |
||
Report:Well it was always going to be a tough ride with the number of hills. But I was wasn't also bargaining on a fierce head wind / cross wind!Despite the difficulty (as well as a spell of rain) we enjoyed riding a number of roads we use less often. Eliane, Hungerford was surprisingly quiet for a Bank Holiday which meant we could sit inside - we needed to warm up after getting wet. We were rewarded with an hour or so of sunshine after we left Hungerford - which was lucky as we had to wait about 10-15 minutes at the March Benham level crossing. It must have been stuck as they eventually opened without a train going through. Thanks to the group for their company. | ||
