Weather:
cold
Report:
I was watching the weather forecast all week wondering if the ride could go ahead and was much encouraged by our forecast starting temperature going up from -1 deg C to zero and the onset of sleet being delayed to 18.00.

I was joined by a hardy, (should that be foolhardy??), group of 5 whose stoicism and good humour ensured the cold and at times icy ride was an enjoyable experience. We all agreed it was good to get out and enjoyed the cinnamon buns at Blakes, (despite having to sit outside).

Many thanks to the group for their unfailing positivity including such remarks as “At least it didn’t snow” and “Ooh, I think it’s brightening up”!

Very sensibly cancelled due to icy conditions - the pavements down to the café from Grove were distinctly slippy in places.
Steph (as ride leader) gets an honourable mention, even though she didn't make it to Down to Earth, slipping on ice and falling from her bike, whilst talking to JT - she returned home safely, to lick her wounds. RP.

RIDE CANCELLED - Freezing condition and an unsurprising lack of riders!

Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).

Heading south to hopefully minimise flooding problems, so a bit of climbing involved. However, we are keeping it as short as possible whilst still enjoying the Lambourn Valley and (importantly) Priscilla's Kitchen in East Garston.

A slightly misty start didn't put people off, although we did lose Angie to a pre-ride puncture. We had to negotiate road works on the A338 path before heading up the "Benchworth Road" path alongside the new King Alfred Way and then out on the lanes to Lockinge and Ardington. We then headed back through Wantage and out again to the Letcombes and a welcome coffee stop at the Cantorist in Childrey. it was a lovely surprise to see Des and Karl there, as well as Mila who had done a solo ride having missed the 1* group at the start. Mila then joined us for the trip home via Goosey and Denchworth.

An incident free ride in great company - thanks to everyone for being there.

1* Saturday Half Day Ride 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
A ride heading out eastwards to Ginge and back to Wantage for a refreshment stop in town. We'll go out via Kingsgrove (pick-up by the Kingsgrove cafe by arrangement) first climbing Crab Hill (aka Benchworth Hill) on the new cycletrack before continuing on to Ardington and Ginge on the Icknield Greenway. From Ginge we'll return to Wantage through Lockinge for refreshments at the Vale and Downland Museum. After refreshments we'll return to Grove following some back routes through Stockham. A round trip of 14 miles or so with a few short ups and downs to keep us warm and get our legs working.

Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting). Please let the ride leader know if you are planning to ride.

Weather:

Report:
Considering how very cold and misty it was, the turnout for the January all-day ride was very gratifying. Think we were all looking to get out on our bikes following Christmas excess!

The mist started to clear once we were over the Ridgeway and approaching Hungerford, however the lack of mist in no way dented the cold :|

Lunch at Time at the Forge was a bit drawn out but gave us time to warmup and discuss strategies for keeping feet warm. Heated foot warmers were even ordered!.

It was definitely slightly warmer on the return along the spring line road. All-in-all a really splendid group to share a challenging ride with :)

A slightly dodgy weather forecast and the likelihood of some standing water results in a nice simple loop around the north Vale. Out via Denchworth and Charney Bassett and over the footbridge to Longworth and Hinton Waldrist. Back via Pusey to coffee at the Stanford cafe before heading home.

Weather:

Report:
Mixed weather forecasts in the lead up, in the end we got cloudless blue skies but with a risk of some ice in the shadows. It was particularly good to see Brian visiting from Yorkshire and Barry back after illness.

As we suspected, the road out to Denchworth was quite wet and there were a few slippery moments, but all was well and it got very slightly warmer as the day went on. We enjoyed the glorious church, pond and manor house at the back of Longworth, successfully negotiated the fairly muddy bridleway across to Hinton Waldrist and enjoyed good refreshments at Stanford cafe.

Thanks to all for a lovely morning on the bike.

A chilly start caused me to scope out the Denchworth Road for ice - it was slushy but rideable with care.
I had booked wall-to-wall sunshine, and duly obliged!
Thirteen riders, including Rob, joining for his first 2 star. The group was split, with JT taking the second lead and Des, back from injury, taking the sweep.
The 'garden' out the back of Bloomfield's was something of a sun trap, and we enjoyed coffees and cakes/pastries outside.

A few of us partook of additional coffee at Costa on our return to Grove.
