3* Saturday Half Day Ride 3*
Leader:
Sharon Bedford
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Beacon Car Park
Description:
Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).

Heading out along the springline before heading over Foxhill to Aldbourne and Ramsbury. Stop at Cafe Bella in Ramsbury before heading home via Lamborne and the Letcombes.
Riders:
Barry Stanton
Jenny Gower
John Tranter
Nick Dunton
Sharon Bedford
Terry Penn
Riders = 6
Report:
The Springline was a little busy with cars but four of the six riders made quick progress to Ashbury where we had agreed to meet Jenny and Terry. The traffic then quietened down and we had a glorious ride over Foxhill to Aldborne and then via Ewin's Hill to Ramsbury. Although Ewin's Hill is a bit of a climb we agreed it was worth it for the fabulous views, the lovely wooded lanes and the fantastic descent!
Cafe Bella in Ramsbury was a good stop - which none of us had been to in a while - and once refreshed we then headed back over yet more hills to get home. According to Garmin we climbed over 800m in 67k

Special thanks from the ride leader to John (who fixed my loose mudguard) and Nick (who paid for my coffee when I had an Apple Pay failure).

A really lovely evening, with a really lovely group. it was great to welcome Lauren on her first club ride. Thanks to Lily for inviting Lauren along. I decided to simplify the route, partly to avoid traffic but also to minimise the effect of a nagging wind. I think it worked out well in both respects - we headed north across the Vale and peered over the edge into the Thames Valley on the track from Longworth to Hinton Waldrist. Once we had turned from Pusey to Gainfield, we were turbo-charged with the wind behind us and made good time.

Thanks to all for a great evening!

A good ride out to Ardington with coffee at the Grocer Chef. Welcome to John L who first rode with the club on the Betjeman Ride this summer and joined us for a normal club ride. Report:
Today’s ride didn’t start well as Paul Bentley broke a cleat within a few hundred metres. He peeled off to go home with a slightly optimistic wish to meet us at coffee. He must have flown because he was one of the first to get there.
Wind was a significant factor today. A headwind on the way up Hackpen and a rather crosswind on the way down into Lambourn. The return climb over the ridge and most of the return route was considerably assisted by tailwinds.

2* Saturday Half Day Ride 2*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:

Description:
Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).

This is a modified version of a classic ride on some rarely used little roads down in the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Fyfield, we then enjoy the dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Standlake, along to Shifford with its tiny church and then Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes down to the Thames at the mysterious hamlet of Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett.

33 miles and about four hours in total, so note the slightly earlier start time.

Report:
A really nice group was tempted out by some nice weather for an early start. We made good time down into the Thames Valley with a helpful tailwind, and took some tracks around Standlake to shake off the holiday traffic. The quiet lanes through Shifford and Cote got us nicely to our coffee stop at Aston Pottery - pleasantly quiet (another perk of the early start). We then took the even quieter lanes down to Chimney and the river Thames. My plan was to retrace our steps at this point, but there was a distinctly adventurous spirit in the group and so we decided to cross the island and see how Duxford Ford was looking. The answer was about as low as it's ever going to be and so my long dreamt-of amphibious club ride finally occurred as everyone either walked or rode over the Ford. Very exciting! It was also quite an effective short cut and so we headed for home across the Vale and still got back by 1pm as originally planned.

Thanks to all for a great adventure!

it was indeed a very hot evening, but there was a bit of breeze and it didn't seem so bad once we were moving. My thanks to Sharon for kindly agreeing to lead a second group on the road. We made good time and the Great Hill was looking very lovely as we approached. Actually the climb was really great and everyone conquered the challenge admirably. King of the Mountain - James!

There was enticing talk about a possible pub stop on the way back, but in the end we decided the daylight was against us and so we slightly reluctantly passed by a number of idyllic village pubs on our way back to Grove.

Thanks to all for a lovely evening adventure out in the Vale.

We set off as a group of 5 for an early coffee at Munch in Southmoor. John S and Andy needed to get back so left us to return to Grove via Charney Bassett.
The remaining three of us crossed the A420 bridge at Southmoor and went into Longworth and down the track past the Manor House to Hinton Waldrist. We then rode down the hill and crossed back over the A420 down to Pusey. On a whim we went down the side road to Pusey Church, where we had a potter around the church yard. We carried on (only going wrong once) crossing the field and woods along the bridleway back to the road between Gainfield and Charney Bassett.
We returned to Grove via Denchworth. A very good relaxed and fun ride exploring and stopping lots :)

Start Time:

Start Location:

Description:
2pm from OMH
A bit of a reverse route for this one from the normal.. out via Denchworth, to West Challow, Childrey, and onto to the Letcombes via Holborn Hill (downhill😎!). Possible tea stop at Letcombe Regis or on to Wantage for refreshments at Marmalade Cafe before the short hop back to Grove… either direct or slightly circuitous via Charlton. Round trip of about 14 miles.

Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting). Please let the ride leader know if you are planning to come.

Nice little group of six for this one.

Welcome to Sarah who was on her first group ride. We enjoyed the gentle potter round. On reaching Childrey we had a nice pause buy the village pond, which, for the first time in quite while - had water in it(!) being enjoyed by a few geese.. There had been some work done to clear the grass and general greenery.

Then after this we psyched ourselves up for the climb out of Childrey. "Take it gently" says the leader as cover up for having a steep climb on the one star.... Rewarded by the gentle descent as we approached Letcombe Bassett, and then the whizz down Holborn Hill - a pleasant change from normally going up.
Arrived at Letcombe Regis where we could have stopped for tea but the cafe was shortly to close for the day. Decided to move on the Marmalade in Wantage for the tea stop. All worked out very well as there was the folk festival on so we enjoyed the music whilst having our well earned refreshments. We also met Tim, who had been unable to ride but joined us for tea.

Then it was the short hop back to Grove, detouring via Charlton.

Thank you all for a lovely ride

A nice group formed for one of our traditional end of season Tuesday 2* rides - to conquer the hill up from East Hendred to Scutchamer Knob. It was particularly good to welcome Adrian on his first 2* ride.

We had a slight struggle to negotiate the roadworks on the A338 for the Lidl supermarket entrance, but after that all was plain sailing on quiet lanes and tracks. Everyone managed the climb very well, particularly Adrian who romped up there excellently. The ancient burial ground / meeting place of Scutchamer Knob, aka Cwichelmeshlaew Hill, has had a lot off vegetation cleared away so we could see the outline of the barrow and also enjoy the views in all directions. We headed for home via the Lains Barn road (good to see a lot of surface patching has improved the surface there).

Thanks to all for a great evening.

A lovely ride out to Appleton with a group of 5. We did the route in reverse to avoid repeating most of the previous Tuesday 1* ride. The weather was overcast to start but warmed up and was just right for sitting outside with sausage rolls and drinks at the Appleton Community shop who were very welcoming. Heading south for a slightly hillier ride than normal, but well worth it for the lovely scenery (and the cakes). Over Hackpen Hill to Lambourn, then along the valley road to East Garston for a well earned stop at the legendary Priscilla's cafe. Then via Great Shefford to the gentle climb across towards Farnborough before we enjoy the big descent down Chain Hill.

3* Isle of Wight Special 3*
Leader:
Sharon Bedford
Start Time:
7:15 am
Start Location:
Lymington Ferry Terminal
Description:
Our annual trip to the Isle of Wight. Ride limited to 12 riders, so early booking recommended.

A random poll revealed mixed views on Southampton or Lymington to start. Southampton is a shorter drive - but Lymington has parking at the terminal. As we did Southampton last year - I have opted for Lymington. We will catch the 07.50 ferry which gets us to Yarmouth by 08.30. Please be there by 7.15am at the latest. Please book your own return ticket - £24.20 or £18 if you are over 60. Wightlink.co.uk website insists you also book a return time - so please opt for 18.05.

This year we are going to deviate from the official "round the island route" to cut out the north east corner (which over recent years has become a bit of a rat run) and the chain ferry (which can be a bit of a bother). Instead we will take some dedicated cycle paths to cut across the centre of the island. I tried these out in early July and they are mostly tarmac and fine for road bikes. The new route adds c10k in distance but is c150m less climbing so should equal out.

Due to the availability of cafes we will have a relatively early coffee stop at MJ's in Niton (30k) . Lunch will be at the Pedallers Cafe (where we lunched in 2024) at 72k. If we are making good time there is the option of ice cream in Cowes (90k).
