Report:
We should have changed the ride to Not the Windrush Winter Warm-up! Yet again the miserable cold, wet weather interfered with cycling plans and as a result the hardy 3 undertook a cold, wet, local ride with potential to extend or contract as the weather dictated. We did the basic route, stopped at the farm cafe in Shrivenham for excellent coffee and in my case brownies before returning to Wantage in steadily improving weather conditions. However 5 minutes after arriving home the heavens opened. Plan B was definitely the right plan! No matter the change of plans and cold, we were all glad to get out on our bikes :)

A chilly damp day with evidence of localized flooding along the route. So went via Lyford instead of West Hanney to join Winter Lane just in case road into West Hanney was under water.

The ride cleared all my 'cob webs'. The staff @ Munch still welcoming.

We set off to a very fine rain, which soon changed to heavy rain.
There was a vote taken at Gainfield as to whether to shorten the ride. Of course, the rain had eased off then, so we all elected to ride on to Ashbury. This prompted the heavy rain to return!
Still, an enjoyable ride in the rain with a good cafe stop and no problems. Thank you all, for being such good company.

MOVED FROM SUNDAY DUE TO WEATHER FORECAST

Riders:

Katherine Boyce
Lisa Footner

Riders = 4
Report:
Moving the ride from the full day ride on the Sunday (cancelled due to heavy rain) to an afternoon only Saturday ride meant that there was a need for a hastily put together route. However despite it being hilly, (I would challenge anyone to plot a c50k ish route to Ramsbury that isn't!), it was well received. The Downs looked splendid in the (rare) February sunshine with both snowdrops and daffodils in plentiful supply . We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the roads south of Lambourn compared to Oxfordshire and we were able to find some very quiet roads with not much traffic. We did come across one flood, but Andy, being the tallest amongst us volunteered to try it out, (Thanks Andy), and concluded it was passable.
Cafe Bella did great coffee and cakes, but we were not able to select anything else from the menu as there was a long wait and we wanted to ensure we were home before the sun (and temperatures) dropped.
Thanks to the group for their great company.

2* Saturday Half Day Awayday Ride 2*
Leader:
Roger Postbeschild
Start Time:
10:00 am
Start Location:
Hilliers Garden Centre, Lechlade
Description:
Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).
An awayday ride, cars can be parked at the garden centre, meet for a pre-ride coffee at 10.00 for a depart at 10.30.
If you can do without a starting coffee, you could just rock up to the garden centre for 10.30.
A minor tour of The Cotswolds, including the delightful Coln Valley.
Coffee (early lunch?) at Coln St Aldwyns Community Stores.
Back in time for a late lunch, and plenty early enough for the Calcutta Cup on the TV.
Weather forecast is for a frosty early morning, with sunshine and light winds....and. of course, a tail wind home!

Weather:
sunnycold
Report:
The day broke to clear blue skies.......an unheard of phenomenon! There was a slight overnight frost, but by our 10.30 start time, there was no sign of this, even on the back roads.
It felt distinctly warm in the sunny car park, but some clothing adjustments were made as we set off into a gentle northwesterly headwind.
Bibury was gridlocked - the Ablington Road was closed (luckily I chose not to enter Bibury this way).
We arrived at the cafe stop in Coln St Aldwyns at 1.15. Having looked up the opening times, I was happy that they were open until 2pm. Regrettably, the cafe stops serving at 1.00. It's worth noting that they stop serving at 12.00 on a Sunday!
Fortunately, we were not that far from Lechlade to return to the garden centre for refreshments.
There was a little divergence from the route towards the end as we couldn't see which way the breakaway group went....

RIDE CANCELLED - Regular Wantage Ride 3*

RIDE CANCELLED - Ride Cancelled - MOVED TO SATURDAY AFTERNOON DUE TO WEATHER

Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.

As we are starting to nudge towards longer days - opted for a ride of c90k. Thought we should also get the climbing legs working again - so there is a sneaky loop up and down Foxhill just for fun, (you will thank me some day honest!)

Cafe stop at Coleshill with option of second stop in Bampton if needed.

1* Saturday Half-Day Ride - Snowdrops revisited 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Update 19/2/26 - with more extensive flooding in the vale today, we'll stay high keeping to the Springline and following a variant of our Snowdrop Ride route from a few weekends ago. And hopefully, we shall still catch plenty of snowdrops and other spring flowers along the way. Through Wantage and out to the Letcombes, then on to Childrey, we'll have the option of an out-and back detour to Sparsholt before returning to Wantage for our refreshment stop. We'll return to Grove via Lockinge and Kingsgrove.

Please let me know if you are planning to come. Optional pick-up by the Vale and Downland museum in Wantage by prior arrangement around 1:20pm.

Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting).
